2005 Algarve Cup
The 2005 Algarve Cup is the 12th edition of the Algarve Cup, an invitational women's football tournament held annually in Portugal. It took place 9–15 March 2005. The USA won the tournament defeating Germany, 1-0, in the final-game. The tournament victory was the fourth for the US, and their third in a row. Format The twelve invited teams are split into three groups that played a round-robin tournament. Since the expansion to 12 teams in 2002, the Algarve Cup format has been as follows: Groups A and B, containing the strongest ranked teams, are the only ones in contention to win the title. The group A and B winners contest the final - to win the Algarve Cup. The runners-up play for third place, and those that finish third in the groups play for fifth place. The teams in Group C played for places 7–12. The winner of Group C played the team that finished fourth in Group A or B (whichever has the better record) for seventh place. Algarve
The Algarve (, , ; from ) is the southernmost NUTS II region of continental Portugal. It has an area of with 467,495 permanent inhabitants and incorporates 16 municipalities ( ''concelhos'' or ''municípios'' in Portuguese). The region has its administrative centre in the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (IATA: FAO) and public university, the University of Algarve, are located. Anja Mittag
Anja Mittag (; born 16 May 1985) is a German football coach and player who plays as a striker. Mittag is currently a player-coach for RB Leipzig. In July 2020, Mittag announced that she will end her playing career after the women's Saxony Cup final on 30 August 2020 and become a full-time coach with RB Leipzig. Vicky Exley
Vicky Exley (born 22 October 1975) is an English former international footballer from Rotherham in South Yorkshire. She most recently played for Doncaster Rovers Belles in the FA WSL, the top division of women's football in England. Exley also played over 50 times for England's national team. Club career Exley joined Sheffield Wednesday Ladies at the age of 15, moving to Doncaster Rovers Belles three years later. Sandrine Dusang (born 23 March 1984 in Vichy) is a French football player currently playing for Juvisy of the Division 1 Féminine. Dusang plays as a defender and is a member of the France women's national football team making her debut in 2003. Career Dusang grew up in the city of Vichy and began her career playing for FCF Nord Allier Yzeure. Anne Mäkinen
Anne Maarit Mäkinen (born 1 February 1976) is a Finnish former footballer who last played for Swedish club AIK in Stockholm. She was a central midfielder. Following her debut in June 1991, Mäkinen represented Finland a record 118 times, with 16 goals as of her retirement in 2009. She was the first Finnish player to play in the WUSA, and played collegiately at the University of Notre Dame. Mäkinen played for Washington Freedom, Philadelphia Charge and New Jersey Wildcats. Kristine Marie Lilly Heavey (; born July 22, 1971) is an American retired soccer player. Corinne Catherine Diacre (born 4 August 1974) is a French professional football manager and former player who played as a defender. She played her entire club career with Soyaux in the Division 1.
