2004–2005 Vendée Globe
The 2004–2005 Vendée Globe is a non-stop solo Round the World Yacht Race for IMOCA 60 class yachts this is the fifth edition of the race starting on 7 November 2004 from Les Sables-d'Olonne. Summary The start of the 2004 race was watched by an estimated 300,000 people, which took place in mild weather. A fast start was followed by a few minor equipment problems, allowing the first racers to cross the equator just after 10 days. This was three days faster than the previous race, with all of the starters still sailing. Attrition began on entry into the Roaring Forties: Alex Thomson diverted to Cape Town to make unassisted repairs and continue racing. The fleet encountered a number of other problems. Hervé Laurent retired with serious rudder problems, Thomson abandoned, and Conrad Humphreys anchored to make unassisted rudder repairs. Les Sables-d'Olonne
Les Sables-d'Olonne (; French meaning: "The Sands of Olonne"; Poitevin: ''Lés Sablles d'Oloune'') is a seaside town in Western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. A subprefecture of the department of Vendée, Pays de la Loire, it has the administrative level of commune. On 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne merged, retaining the latter name. Location and geography Les Sables-d'Olonne is a seaside town in western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated on the coast between La Rochelle and Saint-Nazaire, near the coastal terminus of the A87 that connects it and nearby communities to La Roche-sur-Yon, Cholet, and Angers to the northeast. Benoit Parnaudeau (born 14 July 1972) is a Canadian-born French sailor. Biography He was born in Sherbrooke Sherbrooke ( ; ) is a city in southern Quebec, Canada. It is at the confluence of the Saint-François and Magog rivers in the heart of the Estrie administrative region. Sherbrooke is also the name of a territory equivalent to a regional count ..., Quebec, but grow up living in La Rochelle, and has a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He has been heavily involved in the offshore scene before getting his break as a skipper as he prepared boats of Isabelle Autissier, Christophe Auguin, Didier Munduteguy and more. He completed in the 2004-2005 Vendee Globe. In 2005 he built a Class 40 for the Route du Rhum called Bio-Forer planning Gardens. He finished 14th in class. Bruce Schwab
Bruce Schwab (born April 15, 1960 in Oxnard, California) is an American sailor and ocean racer. He circumnavigated the globe twice on his Open 60 racing yacht ''OceanPlanet'' becoming the 240th and then the 254th solo sailor to do so. Schwab is the first American to officially complete the famous Vendée Globe Race (2004–2005). Early life Born April 15, 1960 in Oxnard, California, Schwab moved to the Seattle area in 1965. He lived there until 1973 when he went on a three year cruise with his father and two younger brothers. While returning up the coast to Seattle in 1976, Bruce sailed with his father on the Gary Mull 42 (formerly "Improbable"). He graduated from Ballard High School in Seattle in 1978 and attended the University of Washington for a short time. Schwab became a professional sailor, yacht rigger, and guitarist. Joé Seeten is a French sailor born on 31 May 1957 in Dunkirk. Biography He discovered sailing thanks to his father, who acquired his first boat in 1967. Joé has had a passion for sailing ever since. He trained as an electric technician. He set up his company, La Voilerie, where for seventeen years he designed and produced sails. At the same time he participates in numerous crew races (Tour de France à la voile, Quarter Tonner World Championship, Discovery Route, Trans-Atlantic Twostar) which allows him to evaluate and prove his sails. The boat was lost during the 2008-2009 Vendee Globe when the boat stopped at Kerguelen Islands but washed ashore by a gust of wind. It was eventually recovered and put on the "Marion Dufresne" and brought back to Reunion Island before being written of and destroyed.
