Conference League (speedway)
The Conference League was the third and lowest division of motorcycle speedway racing in the United Kingdom governed by the Speedway Control Board (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). The other leagues being the Elite League and Premier League. The League consisted of eight teams for the 2008 season. In 2009 it was replaced with the National League. History The British League Division Three had been created in 1994 as a replacement for the second-half junior leagues that were scrapped when British League matches were extended to eighteen heats. The league was renamed the British Academy League in 1995, but many of the teams that took part experienced severe financial problems. In order to reduce costs, the league was re-launched as the Conference league in 1996 and was an entirely amateur competition. Boston Barracudas
The Boston Barracudas were a speedway team that competed from 1970 to 1987 and again from 2000 to 2008. the team were based at Boston Sports Stadium in New Hammond Beck Road, Boston, Lincolnshire. History 1970–1987 The Boston Barracudas were founded mid-season in 1970 by Cyril Crane when the King's Lynn Starlets changed their name. The Barracudas finished the season in 13th place. The team continued to compete in the second division and during the 1973 British League Division Two season completed the league and cup double by finishing 1st in the league table and winning the Knockout Cup. From 1975 to 1987 (excluding 1985) they competed in the National League (the new name for division 2). National League Knockout Cup
The National League Knockout Cup is a speedway third tier Knockout Cup competition in the United Kingdom. The competition was previously known as the Academy League Knockout Cup (1995) and the Conference League Knockout Cup (1996-2008) until it changed name to the National League Knockout Cup. The 2020 and 2021 editions of the Cup were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Newport Wasps
Newport Wasps were a British motorcycle speedway team based in Newport, South Wales from 1964 to 2012. They were the 1999 Conference League champions. The Wasp logo incorporates the traditional black and amber colours of the City of Newport. History 1964–1977 Newport Wasps first competed in the 1964 Provincial Speedway League (division 2), they finished a creditable fourth and also won the division 2 version of the Knockout Cup, when winning the Provincial League Knockout Cup during their debut season. The following season they joined the inaugural British League season (the top division) and would remain in the top division until 1977. The team weas based at the now-defunct Somerton Park stadium, which was also the home of football and greyhound racing. Carmarthen Dragons
Carmarthen Dragons were a British motorcycle speedway team who operated at the United Counties Showground in Nantyci, Carmarthen, Wales, between 2002 and 2005 and later the Loomer Road Stadium, between 2017 and 2019. The team were founded by Nigel Meakins and entered the Conference League (third division) and during their inaugural 2002 Speedway Conference League season finished in 7th place. They competed in the 2003 Speedway Conference League and 2004 Speedway Conference League finishing in 11th and 12th respectively. In 2005, the team disbanded but the venue remained open for training during the season. The team returned to compete in the Midland Development League from 2017 to 2018 and the Midland & Southern Developmnent League during 2019, at the Loomer Road Stadium. Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the SGB Championship, every Sunday night during the season (March–October) from their home at the Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium, previously known as Brough Park, is primarily used for greyhound racing with the speedway track built in the centre. The Weymouth Wildcats were a British motorcycle speedway team based in Weymouth, England, who raced in the National League (speedway), National League. The Wildcats won the first Conference League (speedway), Conference League Championship in their history in 2008 after winning the Conference League play-offs. They closed down in 2010.
