2004 MLS All-Star Game
The 2004 Major League Soccer All-Star Game was the 9th Major League Soccer All-Star Game, played on July 31, 2004 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. between the Eastern Conference All-Stars and Western Conference All-Stars. The Eastern Conference earned the victory after a hard-fought 3-2 win over the West. Overview The game was originally scheduled to be between the MLS All-Stars against Real Madrid at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Once the Spanish team instead decided to play friendlies in Japan, they opted out of the game in the United States and MLS was forced to change the All-Star Game's format. The MLS All-Stars eventually played Real Madrid at their home stadium Santiago Bernabéu in the 2005 Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu. 2004 Major League Soccer Season
The 2004 Major League Soccer season culminated with D.C. United winning its fourth MLS Cup championship. The biggest news in the beginning of the season was the signing of 14-year-old prodigy Freddy Adu, who made his debut as a substitute in United's season opener and scored his first goal several games later against the rival MetroStars. Adu contributed as a substitute on D.C.'s championship team, scoring five goals as the youngest player in North American sports history. The season saw the emergence of forwards Brian Ching ( San Jose) and Eddie Johnson (Dallas Burn) as formidable forwards, not only for their MLS teams, but for the United States national team as well. United States National Men's Soccer Team
The United States men's national soccer team (USMNT) represents the United States in men's international soccer competitions. The team is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation and is a member of FIFA and CONCACAF. The U.S. team has appeared in eleven FIFA World Cups, including the first in 1930, where they reached the semi-finals to finish third, the best result ever by a team from outside UEFA and CONMEBOL. Tabaré "Tab" Ramos Ricciardi (born September 21, 1966) is an American former soccer player and current head coach of Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship. Over his thirteen-year professional career, Ramos played as a midfielder in Spain, Mexico, and the United States. John Harkes
John Andrew Harkes (born March 8, 1967) is an American soccer coach and former professional player who is the head coach of Greenville Triumph SC. A member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Harkes was the first American ever to play in the English Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday, the second American to score at Wembley Stadium, and the first American soccer player to appear in the final of a major English tournament, in the 1991 Football League Cup Final with Sheffield Wednesday. Thomas Dooley
Thomas Dooley (born May 12, 1961) is an American former soccer player and coach. He played as a defender and defensive midfielder and was a long-time member and former captain of the United States national team. Dooley recently served as the head coach of the Philippines national team. Early life Dooley was born to a German mother and a U.S. Army father. Christopher Clemence "Cle" Kooiman (born July 3, 1963) is an American former soccer defender. He played professionally in both Mexico and the United States including the first Major Indoor Soccer League, Western Soccer Alliance, American Professional Soccer League and Major League Soccer. Mike Burns (soccer)
Michael Thomas Burns (born September 14, 1970) is an American former soccer player. During his playing career, he played for Danish club Viborg FF, three MLS teams, as well as the United States national team. Burns was most recently the general manager for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. Career Youth Burns was born and raised in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Antonio Michael "Tony" Meola (; ; born February 21, 1969) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. He represented the United States national team at the 1990, 1994, and 2002 World Cups. Hugo Ernesto Pérez Granados (born November 8, 1963) is a former professional footballer and current manager of the El Salvador national team. Born in El Salvador, he represented the United States national team.
