Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands)
The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. In the 2011 election for the Danish Folketing, the party improved its vote share to 21.0%, and took one of the two Faroese seats previously held by Republic. The Faroe Islands elects on the national level a legislature. The Faroese Parliament (''Løgtingið in Faroese'') has 33 members of parliament, elected for a four-year term by proportional representation. The Faroe Islands have a multi-party system (disputing on independence and unionism as well as left and right), with numerous parties in which a single party normally does not have a chance of gaining power alone, and therefore the parties must work together in order to form a coalition government. Hin Stuttligi Flokkurin (English: ''The Funny Party'') was a joke political party in the Faroe Islands. It was founded in 2004 by the current party leader, Johan Dalsgaard, also known as Johan í Kollafirði and later as Johan í Fámará. The party is based upon political satire. Self-Government (Faroe Islands)
Sjálvstýri (previously Sjálvstýrisflokkurin) (English: referred to interchangeably as ''Independence'', ''Self-Government'', or ''Home Rule'') is a liberal, autonomist political party on the Faroe Islands. It is currently led by the Mayor of Klaksvík, Jógvan Skorheim. Nýtt Sjálvstýri traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroes within the Kingdom of Denmark, but in 1998 it agreed, as part of a coalition deal with Tjóðveldi and Fólkaflokkurin, to support national independence for the Faroes. Today it supports obtaining independence through gradually increasing Faroese autonomy until the Faroe Islands becomes a de facto independent state. The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro- Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Founded in 1939 as a split from the Self-Government Party and by former members of the Business Party (Vinnuflokkurin), the party has traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. Republic ( fo, Tjóðveldi), formerly known as the Republican Party ( fo, Tjóðveldisflokkurin) is a left-wing political party on the Faroe Islands committed to Faroese independence. History The party was founded in 1948 as a reaction to the islands failing to gain independence despite the outcome of the 1946 independence referendum, after which independence was subsequently declared but annulled by the Danish King. In 1998, Høgni Hoydal succeeded Heini O. Heinesen as party leader. During the 20 January 2004 legislative elections, the party won 21.7% of the popular vote and 8 out of 33 seats. The Union Party ( fo, Sambandsflokkurin, also translated Unionist Party) is a conservative-liberal, agrarian political party on the Faroe Islands. The party wants to maintain the Faroe Islands' union with Denmark. On 24 October 2015 Bárður á Steig Nielsen succeeded Kaj Leo Johannesen as party leader. In the elections in 2008, the party won 21.0% of the popular vote and 7 out of 33 seats. After having been in the opposition for a short interval after the elections, the Union Party formed a new government in September 2008, and Kaj Leo Johannesen became prime minister. In the Danish parliamentary elections of 2007, the party received 23.5% of the Faroese vote, thereby gaining one of the two Faroese seats in the national legislature of Denmark. 2008 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 19 January 2008, the latest possible date. The Self-Government Party (Faroe Islands), Self-Government Party and the Centre Party (Faroe Islands), Centre Party gained a seat each while the Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands), Social Democratic Party lost a seat. It had been considered to amend the election law to hold the election two weeks later to pass a number of important bills before the election, but in the end the negotiations on this failed and the election was called on 2007-12-07. Prior to this election, the electoral system was changed in 2007 from a system with seven multi-member constituencies, which had some elements of mixed member proportional voting, to a system with a single constituency for the whole country in order to reduce disproportionality.
