The 2004 Spar European Cup took place on 19 and 20 June 2004 at the Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland. This was the 25th European Cup and the first time the event was hosted by Poland. Bydgoszcz ( , , ; german: Bromberg) is a city in northern Poland, straddling the meeting of the River Vistula with its left-bank tributary, the Brda. Johan Wissman
Johan Lukas Wissman (born 2 November 1982) is a Swedish athlete from Helsingborg, specializing in the 200 and 400 m. He is the current national record holder in both of these events. Wissman won the gold medal at the European Indoor Championships in Athletics 2009 in Torino, Italy. This was Johan's first and long awaited international gold medal at the time 45.89. He finished second in 200 m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2004 and second in 400 m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2008. Yuriy Mikhailovich Borzakovskiy (russian: Юрий Михайлович Борзаковский, , born 12 April 1981) is a Russian middle-distance runner specializing in the 800 metres. Early life Borzakovskiy was born at Kratovo, in the Moscow Oblast. He was named for the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Athletic career Borzakovskiy's first major international success was a victory at the 2000 European Indoor Championships when he was only 18 years old. At the 2000 Summer Olympics he reached the 800 m final, in which he finished sixth. In 2001 he won the World Indoor title over 800 m but decided not to participate in the World Championships in Edmonton. On 24 August 2001, Borzakovskiy posted a time of 1:42.47 minutes. Michael East (athlete)
Michael John East (born 20 January 1978 in Reading, England) is a retired middle-distance athlete. His best result came in winning the 1500 metres gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. He was the last British male to win a major 1500m title until Jake Wightman became World Champion in 2022. He has also had some success in the IAAF European Cup finishing second and third in 2002 and 2003 respectively at the same distance. Mehdi Baala ( ar, مهدي بعلة; born 17 August 1978 in Strasbourg) is a French, middle-distance runner competing mainly in the 1500 metres event. Baala has won several major international championships medals in the 1500 metres event – an Olympic Games bronze, a World Championships silver, two European Championships golds and a European Indoor Championships bronze. Moreover, he has won several medals in the 1500 metres event of the European Cup, IAAF World Cup and the IAAF World Athletics Final. 1500 Metres
The 1500 metres or 1,500-metre run (typically pronounced 'fifteen-hundred metres') is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The event is closely associated with its slightly longer cousin, the mile race, from which it derives its nickname "the metric mile". The demands of the race are similar to that of the 800 metres, but with a slightly higher emphasis on aerobic endurance and a slightly lower sprint speed requirement. The 1500 metre race is predominantly aerobic, but anaerobic conditioning is also required. Arnoud Okken (born 20 April 1982 in Doetinchem) is a Dutch track and field athlete specialising in the 800 metres. His first international victory came at the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships. Commenting on the win, Okken stated that "my plan was to take the lead and keep away from any trouble. René Herms
René Herms (17 July 1982 – 9 January 2009) was a German middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 metres. Herms was born in Dohna, Bezirk Dresden, East Germany. He won the silver medal in 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2000 World Junior Championships, became European junior champion in 2001 and finished seventh at the 2002 European Championships. He also competed at the World Championships in 2003 and 2005 as well as the 2004 Olympic Games without reaching the finals. His personal best time was 1:44.14 minutes, achieved in August 2004 in Munich. He competed for the athletics clubs LSV Pirna and LG Braunschweig. Florent Lacasse (born 21 January 1981, in Paris) is a French middle distance runner who specializes in the 800 metres. He finished sixth at the 2006 European Athletics Championships and seventh at the 2006 IAAF World Cup. He also competed in the 2004 Olympics. In 2007 Lacasse was found guilty of testosterone doping. The sample was delivered on 18 May 2007 in an out-of-competition test in Manosque. He received an IAAF suspension from July 2007 to July 2009. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. Leslie Djhone (born 18 March 1981 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast) is a French track and field athlete who competes in the 400 metres and 4 x 400 metres relay. Djhone won the 400 metres gold medal at the 2011 European Indoor Championships and the 400 metres bronze medal at the 2006 European Championships. Ingo Schultz (born 26 July 1975) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the 400 metres. Career Schultz was born in Lingen.
