The 2003–04 Sporting de Gijón season was the sixth consecutive season of the club in Segunda División after its last relegation from La Liga. Overview In July 2003, due to the financial difficulties, Real Sporting sold David Villa to Zaragoza by €2.5m On 15 February 2004, in the game at Algeciras, Roberto beat the record for the longest clean sheet in Real Sporting at 727 minutes. On 23 May 2004, Real Sporting earned one point at SD Eibar in the additional time, in a game where the ''rojiblancos'' ended with eight players after the referee sent off Yago, Cristian Díaz and David Bauzá in ten minutes. Sporting De Gijón
Real Sporting de Gijón, S.A.D. (), commonly known as Real Sporting, Sporting Gijón, or simply Sporting (although in an international context this can lead to confusion with Sporting Clube de Portugal) is a Spanish football club from Gijón, Principality of Asturias. Founded on 1 July 1905, it plays in La Liga Santander. Known as ''Los Rojiblancos'' because of their red and white striped jerseys, their home ground is El Molinón stadium, the oldest professional football ground in Spain, in use since at least 1908. Traditionally their red and white shirts are accompanied by blue shorts with the socks recently also being blue. Its Asturian name is ''Real Sporting de Xixón''. Yago Yao Alonso-Fueyo Sako (born 19 August 1979), known as Yago Yao, is a former footballer who played as a central defender. Yago Yao spent his entire 18-year senior career in Spain, amassing a combined La Liga totals of 43 matches and one goal for Celta (two spells) and Recreativo. He added 123 games in the Segunda División, with Celta as well as four other clubs. Born in Ivory Coast, Yago Yao represented Spain at under-18 level and Equatorial Guinea at senior level. Jeffrey Hoogervorst (born 23 October 1984) is a Dutch retired footballer who played as a central defender. Club career Born in Amsterdam, Hoogervorst moved at only 18 from local AFC Ajax to Sporting de Gijón in Spain, after signing a three-year contract. With the Segunda División club he only appeared regularly in the 2005–06 season, also serving a loan at lowly Asturias neighbours Marino de Luanco. In summer 2006, Hoogervorst agreed to a deal at Real Madrid Castilla also in the second level, but was highly unsuccessful during his brief spell, playing only one match (one minute) as the team were also relegated; in the following transfer window he dropped down to Segunda División B after joining FC Barcelona B, being finally released by the Pep Guardiola-led side in March 2008.
