2003 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 3000 Metres Steeplechase
These are the official results of the Men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris, France. There were a total number of 36 participating athletes, with three qualifying heats and the final held on Tuesday 2003-08-26 at 21:30h. Analysis In Kenya, where the steeplechase is virtually the national sport and source of national pride, the top up and coming athletes in 2003 were Stephen Cherono and Ezekiel Kemboi. Along with Stephen's brother Abraham Cherono, they swept the 2002 Commonwealth Games Steeplechase for Kenya. In 2003, there was a huge change. Qatar was near the beginning of their program to purchase mercenary athletes; young, promising athletes who would take Qatari citizenship and (unique to Qatar's program) take on a different name. Simon Vroemen
Simon Frans Vroemen (born 11 May 1969 in Delft, South Holland) is a Dutch runner, specialising in the steeplechase. Biography Vroemen has a degree in molecular sciences from the Wageningen University. He wrote his dissertation on the stress physiology of grasshoppers. He has since worked as an engineer for Shell and currently resides at Vught. Originally a 1500 metres runner, he changed his focus in 1994 to the steeplechase, in which he has been internationally successful. On 19 July 2002, he broke the nearly 20 year old European record by running 8:06.91 in Monaco. On 26 August 2005 in Brussels he broke his own European record, setting it at 8:04.95, which remained until 2009. He placed 12th in the Sydney Olympic Games (2000) and 6th in the Athens Olympic Games (2004). Daniel Lincoln (born October 22, 1980 in Ruston, Louisiana) is a former world-class American track and field athlete and the former American record holder in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Education In 1998, Lincoln graduated from the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences located in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The same year, he also attained the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. Lincoln accepted the Chancellor's Scholarship, a full academic scholarship, to the University of Arkansas where, in 2002, he received a BS in chemistry with a focus in biochemistry and a minor in mathematics. Michael Kipkorir Kipyego (born 2 October 1983) is a Kenyan runner who competes in marathon races. He was initially a specialist in the 3000 metres steeplechase and was the 2002 World Junior Champion in the event. He represented Kenya in the steeplechase at the World Championships in 2003 and was runner-up at the 2008 African Championships. He set a personal best of 8:08.48 hours in 2009.
