2003 Newfoundland And Labrador General Election
The 2003 Newfoundland and Labrador general election was held on October 21, 2003, to elect the 48 members of the 45th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. The election was called on September 29 by Premier Roger Grimes of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. Results This election marked only the third change of government in the 54 years since the province joined Canada. The Liberals, led by Roger Grimes, were soundly defeated by the Danny Williams-led Progressive Conservative Party, who took almost three-quarters of the seats in the House of Assembly and well over half of the popular vote. The Liberals lost seven of their 17 Cabinet ministers, along with the Speaker of the House, from the preceding government. Jack Harris and the New Democrats hopes to increase their seat total from two were frustrated, although their incumbents were re-elected. 45th General Assembly Of Newfoundland And Labrador
The 45th Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly began on November 12, 2003, with the swearing in of Members. The Premier and Executive Council had been sworn in on November 6, 2003. The Progressive Conservative government led by Danny Williams was elected with a victory over the Liberal Party. The Liberal and New Democratic Party (NDP) opposition was greatly decreased from what it was after the 1999 election. Danny Williams was the Premier during this General Assembly. Legislative Assembly Of Newfoundland And Labrador
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Joan Marie Aylward was a Canadian politician, who sat in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1996 to 2003 as a member of the Liberals. Shawn Skinner is a Canadian politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Skinner is a former St. John's City Councillor (1993-1997; 2020-2021) and former Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for the district of St. John's Centre. Ed Byrne (politician)
Ed Byrne (born 1963) was a Canadian politician, formerly a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He served as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and opposition leader from 1998 to 2001. When the Conservatives came to power in 2003, he was named Minister of Natural Resources and Government House Leader, being considered the second-most powerful politician in the province after Premier Danny Williams. Byrne was forced to step down from cabinet in 2006 after it was revealed that he and several other legislators had exceeded their constituency allowance claims, which led to a criminal investigation. He resigned from the Assembly at the end of that year. Kilbride (electoral District)
Kilbride is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 10,251 eligible voters living within the district. The district was abolished in 2015 and replaced by Waterford Valley. The district made up the southern portion of the city of St. John's, including the rural neighbourhoods of the Goulds and Kilbride. Agriculture was an important industry in the district. It was one of the strongest Progressive Conservative (PC) districts in the Newfoundland and Labrador, voting 85% for the Torys in the 2007 election.
