The Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 ( ar, الرابطة الجزائرية المحترفة الأولى لكرة القدم); known as Championnat National de Première Division or Ligue 1 for short, and formerly known as the Championnat National 1, is the Algerian professional league for association football clubs. It is the country's primary football competition and serves as the top division of the Algerian football league system. Ligue 1 is one of two divisions making up the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the other being Ligue Professionnelle 2. The league is contested by 16 clubs, and it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2. Entente Sportive Sétifienne ( ar, الوفاق الرياضي السطايفي), known as Entente de Sétif, commonly referred to as ES Sétif or ESS for short, is an Algerian professional football club based in Sétif. The club was founded in 1958 and its colours are black and white. Their home stadium, the Stade 8 Mai 1945, has a capacity of 18,000 spectators. The club is currently playing in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1. ESS is one of the most successful clubs in Algeria, having won the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 eight times and the Algerian Cup a record of eight times. They are also one of only three Algerian clubs to have won the CAF Champions League, winning it twice in 1988 and 2014. The Algerian Ligue 2, also called Ligue 2 , formerly known as Ligue Professionnelle 2 and Championnat National 2, is the second highest division overall in the Algerian football league system. It was professional from 2010 to 2020. History The league was created in 1962, when Algeria became an independent nation, and has been played in a number of different formats. In 2010, the league became fully professional. Prior to the start of the 2010 season, the name of the league was changed to the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 2 to reflect the professionalization of the league. On 15 December 2011, six clubs from the league were sanctioned by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) for not responding to their set deadline (7 December 2011) in solving the disputes between their players.
