2002 Manipur Legislative Assembly Election
Elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly were held in February 2002, to elect members of the 60 constituencies in Manipur, India. The Indian National Congress won the most seats as well as the popular vote, and Okram Ibobi Singh was appointed as the Chief Minister of Manipur. The Indian National Congress didn't have a majority of seats on its own and joined the Secular Proggresive Front alliance, along with the Communist Party of India, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Manipur State Congress Party. After the passing of ''The Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 1976'', the constituencies were set to the ones used in this election. Bijoy Koijam is a politician from Manipur, India. In 2002, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur, as the Manipur State Congress Party candidate in the constituency Thongju. In 2003, he was appointed Minister of Family Welfare in the state government. He was removed from his ministerial post in 2004. Lok Shakti ( lit. People's Power) is a political party in India. Lok Shakti was one of several parties that were formed when the Janata Dal crumbled in the mid-1990s. LS was formed in February 1997 after Ramakrishna Hegde was expelled from Janata Dal. Lok Shakti emerged as a major party in Karnataka. It was a founding member of the National Democratic Alliance. Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) (SJP(R)), also called as Janata Dal (Socialist) is an Indian political party founded by Chandra Shekhar, 8th Prime Minister of India in 1990–91, and led by him until his death on 8 July 2007. Chandra Shekhar was the sole Lok Sabha MP of the party at the time of his death. The party was formed on 5 November 1990 when Chandra Shekhar and Devi Lal broke away from Janata Dal.
