2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Women's Race
The Senior women's race at the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held at the Leopardstown Racecourse near Dublin, Ireland, on March 23, 2002. Reports of the event were given in '' The New York Times'', in the Herald, and for the IAAF. Complete results for individuals, for senior women's teams, medallists, and the results of British athletes who took part were published. Rose Cheruiyot
Rose Jelagat Cheruiyot (born 21 July 1976) is a runner from Kenya. She competed in the 5000 metres at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics. She is married to Ismael Kirui. The couple completed an unusual double, when they both won their senior races at the Belfast International Cross Country in 1995. Cheruiyot broke the 5000 metres Kenyan record in 1996, timing 14:46.41. The record was beaten in September 2000 by Leah Malot, the new record was 14:39.83. Kathy Butler (born 22 October 1973) is a long-distance runner who competes in the 10,000 metres and marathon, as well as cross country running and road running. Born in Scotland, she has competed internationally for both Great Britain and Canada. Early life and collegiate career Butler was born in Edinburgh of English parents and brought up in Edinburgh and the Isle of Wight until her parents emigrated to Ontario, Canada when she was 10. She attended the University of Guelph, Canada before transferring to the University of Wisconsin, USA. In 2004, she was inducted into the University of Wisconsin hall of fame. In 2005, she was inducted into the University of Guelph hall of fame. As a member of the cross country and track teams at the University of Wisconsin, Butler was a five-time NCAA Champion and a 13-time All-American. Elizabeth Anne Yelling (née Talbot; born 5 December 1974, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire) is a British long-distance runner currently based in Poole, Dorset. She is the sister-in-law of fellow British runner Hayley Yelling through her marriage to steeplechaser Martin Yelling and is the former training partner of Paula Radcliffe. Joan Jepkorir Aiyabei (born 17 May 1979 in Uasin Gishu) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. In 1996, she finished in 5th place in the women's 5000 metres at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Athletics held in Sydney, Australia. She finished sixteenth at the 2002 World Cross Country Championships, but this was not enough to give her a place on the medal-winning team. She finished the season on a high note with a win at the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños. Kayoko Fukushi
is a Japanese long-distance runner, who specializes in the 5000, 10,000 metres and marathon. Fukushi represented Japan at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. She holds a marathon best of 2:22:17 hours. Fukushi won two silver medals at the 2002 Asian Games and then won the 10,000 m gold medal at the 2006 edition. She is a former world record holder in the 15 km road race and is the Japanese record holder in the 5000 m, 10,000 m, and 10K road distance. Fukushi is also a six-time national champion over the 5000 m. Jane Moraa Omoro (born 12 September 1974) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competed in cross country, track and road running events, up to the marathon. She was active from 1993 to 2007, with most of her success coming in the 1990s. Omoro was a five time participant for Kenya at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won a team medal each time, including the women's team title in 1998. Ayelech Worku (born June 12, 1979) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, most known for winning two World Championships bronze medals on the 5000 metres. She was born in the Arsi Zone of the Oromia province, the same region as double Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie. Worku began competing at a young age: she won the 5000 m silver medal at the 1995 All-Africa Games when she was sixteen years old and won the event at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Athletics. Jennifer "Jen" Rhines (born July 1, 1974 in Syracuse, New York) is an American long-distance runner who competes in track, cross country and road running events. She has competed in three different Summer Olympics and made 15 US Teams. Rhines attended Villanova University as an undergraduate.
