General elections were held in Ecuador on 20 October 2002, with a second round of the presidential elections on 24 November.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p380 The result was a victory for Lucio Gutiérrez of the PSP– MUPP–NP alliance, who won the run-off with 54.8% of the vote. Lucio Gutiérrez
Lucio Edwin Gutiérrez Borbúa (born 23 March 1957 in Quito) served as 43rd President of Ecuador from 15 January 2003 to 20 April 2005. Early life Lucio Gutierrez, in full Lucio Edwin Gutiérrez Borbua, (born 23 March 1957, Quito, Ecuador), Ecuadoran army colonel and politician who served as president of Ecuador (2003–05). Gutiérrez was raised in Tena, an Amazon basin town. He was the son of a traveling salesman and attended primary and secondary school in Tena before transferring at age 15 to a military college in Quito. Gutiérrez graduated from the Army Polytechnic School as a civil engineer after having won honor's for academic and athletic prowess. He later studied in Brazil and the United States. Gutiérrez rose steadily through the army ranks and in 1990–92 served with the United Nations observer mission to Nicaragua. Ecuadorian Roldosist Party
The Ecuadorian Roldosist Party (PRE) (''Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano'') was a populist political party in Ecuador. The party was named after former President Jaime Roldós. It was founded after Roldós' death by his brother-in-law Abdalá Bucaram as a more leftish spin-off from the Concentration of People's Forces. Bucaram was elected President in 1996 but was impeached the following year. Though Jaime Roldós's brother León Roldós is still very involved in Ecuadorian politics, he is not a member of the Roldosist Party. At the legislative elections, 20 October 2002, the party won 15 out of 100 seats. Its candidate Jacobo Bucaram Ortiz won 11.9% of the vote in the presidential elections of the same day, coming in 6th place. Concentration Of People's Forces
The Concentration of People's Forces ( es, Concentración de Fuerzas Populares, CFP) was a populist political party in Ecuador. It was founded in 1949 and played a major role in Ecuadorian politics of the 1960s and 1970s, with its stronghold being in Guayaquil. Jaime Roldós Aguilera, a member of the party, was the country's president from 1979 to 1981. Since the end of the 1980s, it has fallen into insignificance. Many in the party leadership are of Lebanese descent and developed a power base in support of popular figures turned politicians. Under the leadership of Assad Bucaram it was one of Ecuador's largest parties in the 1960s and 1970s. CFP's Jaime Roldós (the husband of Bucaram's niece) became the first freely-elected president of Ecuador after the rule of the military juntas in the 1970s. Democratic People's Movement
The Democratic People's Movement ( es, link=no, Movimiento Popular Democrático, MPD) was the electoral wing of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Ecuador (affiliated with the ICMLPO-U&S) and a political party in Ecuador since 1978. At the legislative elections of 20 October 2002, the party won at least 3 out of 100 seats. It again won 3 seats at the 2006 elections, where its presidential candidate Luis Villacis came in 9th place with 1.33% of the vote. In the 2009 National Assembly elections it won 5 out of 124 seats with 4.05% of the vote. Within 26 years of its founding, the MPD reached 29 national and provincial deputies, a prefect, 33 provincial councilors, 21 mayors and council chairmen, 285 councilors, and 313 parish council members. Christian Democratic Union (Ecuador)
The Christian Democratic Union ( es, Unión Demócrata Cristiana, ''UDC), formerly known as Popular Democracy ( es, Democracia Popular, DP) was a Christian democratic political party in Ecuador. It was formed in the 1970s by centrist Christian Democrats who had left the Social Christian Party and the left wing of the Conservative Party who were oriented towards Liberation theology. It officially registered as a political party in 1979. It was originally considered a centre-left party. Later in the 1990s, it shifted to the centre-right. Antonio Vargas
Carlos Antonio Vargas Guatatuca (born 1 December 1958 in Unión Base, Puyo) is an indigenous Quechua politician of Ecuador. He was leader of the Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de Ecuador (CONAIE) and Minister for Social Welfare under president Lucio Gutiérrez from 2003 to 2005. Vargas was involved in the 2000 Ecuadorian coup d'état. Life Vargas' mother, Eliseo, was a naturopath who spoke one of the Zaparoan languages, while his father, Acevedo, was a Kichwa-speaking merchant specializing in iron housewares.
