2002 Belarusian Premier League
The 2002 Belarusian Premier League was the 12th season of top-tier football in Belarus. It started on April 12 and ended on November 8, 2002. Belshina Bobruisk were the defending champions. Team changes from 2001 season Teams finished on the last two places in 2001 – Naftan Novopolotsk and Vedrich-97 Rechytsa relegated to the First League. They were replaced by 2001 First League winners Torpedo Zhodino and the newcomers, First League runners-up Zvezda-VA-BGU Minsk. Neman-Belcard Grodno changed their name back to Neman Grodno. Overview BATE Borisov and Neman Grodno finished the season with equal number of points and advanced to the Championship Play-Off. BATE won the play-off game and became the champions for the 2nd time. Belarusian Premier League
The Belarusian Premier League or the Vyšejšaja Liha or the Vysheyshaya Liga ( be, Вышэйшая ліга, russian: Высшая лига, "Top League") is the top division of professional football in Belarus, and is organized by the Belarusian Football Federation. The number of teams in the competition has varied over the years from as high as 17 (1992–93 season) to as low as 11 (2012). As of 2016, the league included 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the course of the season. At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League, while the third worst team plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the third best team from the second tier. The top two teams from the Belarusian First League automatically win promotion to the Premier League. Bobruisk
Babruysk, Babrujsk or Bobruisk ( be, Бабруйск , Łacinka: , rus, Бобруйск, Bobrujsk, bɐˈbruɪ̯s̪k, yi, באָברויסק ) is a city in the Mogilev Region of eastern Belarus on the Berezina River. , its population was 209,675. The name Babrujsk (as well as that of the Babruyka River) probably originates from the Belarusian word (; ' beaver'), many of which used to inhabit the Berezina. FC Gomel ( be, ФК Гомель), or FK Homiel, is a Belarusian football club, playing in the city of Gomel. Their home stadium is Central Stadium. History Teams from Gomel (usually city or raion selection or railway-based team ''Lokomotiv'', but not always) played in the Belarusian SSR championships since the early 1920s. In 1946, Belorusian SSR league for one season becomes one of the zones of the USSR 3rd level league, and ''Lokomotiv Gomel'' became the first city team to play in the Soviet league. The modern Gomel team was founded in 1959 as ''Lokomotiv Gomel''. They played at the 2nd level of Soviet football between 1959 and 1968. History Dnepr Mogilev was founded in 1960 under the name Khimik Mogilev and began playing in the Class B (second tier league) of Soviet championship, which at the time consisted of over 140 teams split into several regional zones. In 1963, the team relegated to the third tier due to league structure reorganization and changed their name to Spartak Mogilev. The team plays their home games at the Torpedo Stadium in Minsk, which holds 4,800 people. They currently play in Belarusian Second League. 2002–03 Belarusian Cup
2002–03 Belarusian Cup was the twelfth season of the Belarusian annual football cup competition. Contrary to the league season, it is conducted in a fall-spring rhythm. The first games were played on 7 August 2002. Winners of the Cup qualified for the UEFA Cup qualifying round. First round 17 teams joined competition in this round. Six clubs from Second League were drawn against six clubs from First League. Another five First League teams ( Darida Minsk Raion, Naftan Novopolotsk, Kommunalnik Slonim, Torpedo-Kadino Mogilev, Khimik Svetlogorsk) advanced to the next round by drawing of lots. The rest of First and Second League teams did not participate in this edition of the Cup. All games were played on 7 August 2002.
