2001–02 Stoke City F.C. Season
The 2001–02 season was Stoke City's 95th season in the Football League and the eighth in the third tier. After two failed attempts to gain promotion via the play-offs the pressure was now on Gudjon Thordarson to achieve automatic promotion. Graham Kavanagh was sold for £1 million as well as fan favourite Peter Thorne to Cardiff City and with the money raised Stoke went out and brought some useful additions. After a slow start City went on a 10 match unbeaten run which was brought to a halt by Wigan in November. In January Stoke lost their form and fell away from automatic promotion places and it became clear that it would be the play-offs again for Stoke. And it was Cardiff who were Stoke's opponents with the first leg ending in a 2–1 win for the "Bluebirds" and it seemed that in the second leg Cardiff would hold on for a goalless draw but two very late goals gave Stoke a famous victory and they went to secure promotion by beating Brentford 2–0 in the final. Graham Kavanagh
Graham Anthony Kavanagh (born 2 December 1973) is an Irish football manager and former professional player. Kavanagh had a 19-year-long career and played for Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United. He also played 16 games for the Republic of Ireland national football team, scoring once. Club career Kavanagh began his career at Home Farm, before joining Middlesbrough in 1991 but struggled to ever hold down a first team place and was sold to Stoke City in 1996, after a short loan spell at the club, for £250,000. In 1996–97 he made 41 appearances scoring four goals including the final goal at the Victoria Ground against West Bromwich Albion. Huddersfield Town A
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. Peter Hoekstra (footballer)
Peter Martin Hoekstra (; born 4 April 1973) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a winger for PSV Eindhoven, Ajax and Stoke City. Capped 5 times by the Dutch national team, he was a member of the Dutch squad at Euro 1996 in England under manager Guus Hiddink. Club career Hoekstra started his career at PSV Eindhoven where he played for 5 years, making over 100 appearances for the club. Ajax Amsterdam signed him for £2m in 1996 to replace Marc Overmars. Injuries halted his career at Ajax and he was loaned out to Spanish side SD Compostela in 1999 and Dutch side FC Groningen in 2000. David Rowson
David Andrew Rowson (born 14 September 1976) is a Scottish former footballer. Career He started his professional career at his home town club Aberdeen, whilst at Aberdeen was a key member of the side that made the Scottish Cup final in 2000. He returned from a loan spell at Livingston halfway through the season where he was sent to recuperate from a knee injury. During the last 10 games of season 1999–00, he did enough to merit his place in the side to play Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final, ahead of fans favourite Hicham Zerouali. Jurgen Vandeurzen
Jurgen Vandeurzen (born 26 January 1974) is a former Belgian professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent most of his career in Belgium apart from a two-year spell playing in England for Stoke City F.C., Stoke City. Career Vandeurzen made his debut for his local club K.R.C. Genk, Genk on 24 November 1991. A product of the club's youth teams, he is most often a replacement but nevertheless plays around thirty games during his first two seasons in professional football. From the 1993–94 Belgian First Division, 1993–94 season, Vandeurzen became a regular player in the Genk midfield. Unfortunately for him and for his team, Genk finished in last position and was relegated to the Belgian Second Division. Syarhey Pyatrovich Shtanyuk ( be, Сяргей Пятровіч Штанюк, russian: link=no, Серге́й Петрович Штанюк, tr. ''Sergey Petrovich Shtanyuk''; born 13 August 1973), also known as Sergei Petrovich Shtanyuk, is a Belarusian former professional footballer who played as a defender. Neil Cutler
Neil Anthony Cutler (born 3 September 1976) is an English former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Cutler started playing football with West Bromwich Albion and after loan spells at Coventry City, Tamworth and Chester City he moved on to Crewe Alexandra in 1996. Further loan spells with Chester, Leek Town, Cheltenham Town and Stalybridge Celtic followed until he moved permanently to Chester City. After a season at the Deva Stadium, Cutler earned a move to Aston Villa. With first team opportunities limited at Villa Cutler played on loan with Oxford United and then joined Stoke City in July 2001. Peter Handyside
Peter David Handyside (born 31 July 1974) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a defender from 1992 until 2007. Despite being Scottish, Handyside played his entire career in England, having initially came through the youth ranks at Heston Rovers he was scouted by Grimsby Town who signed him as a junior before promoting him to the first team in 1992. Handyside went on to make over 200 appearances for Grimsby in all competitions and was in the team that won the Football League Second Division play-offs and Football League Trophy during the 1997–98 season. In 2001 after nine years at Blundell Park, Handyside joined Stoke City who he went on to captain and eventually earning promotion out of the Second Division like he had previously done at Grimsby.
