2001–02 Montreal Canadiens Season
The 2001–02 Montreal Canadiens season was the club's 93rd season. After missing the playoffs in the three preceding seasons, the Canadiens returned to the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Canadiens were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Carolina Hurricanes by a series score of 4–2. Off-season Regular season The Canadiens season began with a shocking announcement that team captain Saku Koivu was suffering from intra-abdominal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer. Eastern Conference (NHL)
The Eastern Conference (french: Conférence de l'Est) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Western Conference. History Originally named the Prince of Wales Conference, it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The Prince of Wales Trophy dates back to 1925, when it was donated to the League by the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII and then the Duke of Windsor. Sergei Berezin
Sergei Yevgenyevich Berezin (russian: Серге́й Евгеньевич Березин; born November 5, 1971) is a former National Hockey League, NHL player from 1996–97 NHL season, 1996–97 through 2002–03 NHL season, 2002–03. Berezin, who played Winger (ice hockey), left wing in the NHL, was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the tenth round (#256 overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He played with the Leafs until being traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001. At the end of the season he was flipped to the Montreal Canadiens where he scored their 10,000th goal on home ice. In the offseason he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks before being sent to the Washington Capitals in a trade deadline day deal. He retired from the NHL and returned to Russia to play a final season before ending his career completely. The 2001–02 Phoenix Coyotes season was their sixth season in the National Hockey League, the franchise's 23rd season in the NHL and 30th overall. The Coyotes qualified for the playoffs after a one–year absence, but lost in the Western Conference Quarterfinals to the San Jose Sharks in five games. Brian Savage
Brian Arthur Savage (born February 24, 1971) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who played twelve seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers. Playing career Savage attended Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School in Sudbury as a teenager. He was a proficient golfer and track athlete. The 2001–02 New York Rangers season was the franchise's 76th season. During the regular season, the Rangers finished fourth in the Atlantic Division, compiling a 36–38–4–4 record. Their 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference kept them out of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the fifth straight season. Head coach Ron Low was fired after the season. The 2001–02 Dallas Stars season was the Stars' 9th season as the Dallas Stars and the 35th overall of the franchise. It was the Stars' first season playing home games at the American Airlines Center, and they went 18–13–6–4 in their new home stadium. However, they did not follow up their success from the previous year, only picking up 90 points for 36 wins against 28 losses for 4th place in the division and 10th in the Conference. Shaun Kelly Van Allen (born August 29, 1967) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1991 to 2004. He played 794 games in the NHL and scored 269 points. He serves as the head coach of the Carleton University Ravens of the Ontario University Athletics, OUA.
