2001–02 Honduran Liga Nacional
The 2001–02 season in the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras, Honduran Liga Nacional was divided into two phases, the Apertura tournament which lasted from September to December 2001, and the Clausura tournament which was played from January to May 2002. F.C. Motagua, C.D. Motagua and C.D. Comayagua
Comayagua () is a city, municipality and old capital of Honduras, located northwest of Tegucigalpa on the highway to San Pedro Sula and above sea level. The accelerated growth experienced by the city of Comayagua led the municipal authorities to structure a territorial reorganization plan. Between the years of 1945 -1975 the population of the city quadrupled due to the high rate of population growth achieved at that time (4.8%) and to migratory movements in the interior of the country. In 2020 the estimated population of the city was 111,700. It is the capital of the Comayagua department of Honduras and it is noted for its wealth of Spanish Colonial architecture. Wilmer Velásquez
Wilmer Raynel Neal Velásquez (born April 28, 1972) is a retired Honduran footballer who played as a forward. He was regarded as one of the greatest footballers in Honduran soccer for Olimpia, and by foremost as the nation's greatest striker ever alongside Carlos Pavón. He is currently the all-time top goalscorer in the Honduran National Football League with 196 goals, and was the second player to reach 150 goals after Denilson Costa. Club career Nicknamed ''El Matador'', Velásquez started his professional career with Olimpia and he would not play for any other Honduran team during his career. He made his debut on 1 November 1990 against Platense and scored his first goal on 23 January 1992 against city rivals Motagua. He did play for other teams though, with Concepción in Chile, Sport-Recife in Brazil and Atlas in Mexico but was not very successful with all of them. Elmer Mejía
Elmer Antonio Mejía Rodríguez (born 23 June 1978) is a retired footballer who last played for Real Esteli in the Nicaraguan Primera División. Born in Honduras, he represented both Honduras and Nicaragua internationally. Club career Mejía played for F.C. Motagua, with whom he won the 2001 Apertura, before moving abroad to become captain of Nicaraguan side Real Estelí. By 2012, Mejía had scored 100 goals for Estelí after winning the league's top goalscorer award with 14 goals. José Mauricio Pacini (born 8 June 1976) is an Argentine football player who most recently played for Platense F.C. in the Honduran national league. Club career He played in Honduras for several years. He started his career at Universidad in 1999-2000 Apertura. Later he played for Vida, C.D. Platense, F.C. Motagua, Marathón, Real España, Victoria, and Olimpia, winning the title with Platense in 2001 ( 2000-01 Clausura), with Motagua in 2001 ( 2001-02 Apertura), and with Marathón in 2003 ( 2002-03 Clausura). El Clásico Moderno (The Modern Classic) also referred by some as the Clasico Moderno Hondureño is a Honduran football match played at least 4 times a year in the Honduran Liga Nacional and consists of two teams, Olimpia and Real España. The Clásico Moderno is the most fierce derby played in Honduras. The two "Barras" (MegaBarra and Commando 12 from España and Ultra Fiel from Olimpia) confront themselves with deadly results almost every time they meet. The Motagua River () is a river in Guatemala. It rises in the western highlands of Guatemala where it is also called Río Grande, and runs in an easterly direction to the Gulf of Honduras. Honduran Superclásico
The Clasico Capitalino (Capital's Derby), also known as the local derby played between F.C. Motagua and C.D. Olimpia. These two teams lead the Honduran Football League as most frequent holders of the championship trophy, and their rivalry is the biggest one in the country. Olimpia wears the white uniform, with blue and red highlights. Their mascot is a lion. Olimpia is the oldest team in the league and holds the largest number of championship titles. Motagua wears a navy blue uniform. It is nearly as old a team as Olimpia. Motagua’s mascot is an eagle and has the second largest number of championship titles.
