2001 In Indy Lights
The 2001 CART PPG/Dayton Indy Lights Championship Powered By Buick consisted of 12 races. It was dominated by Townsend Bell who captured six victories on his way to the championship. It was the last Indy Lights season, as the series organizer, CART, decided to drop the Indy Lights series and concentrate its efforts on the Toyota Atlantic Championship. Most former Indy Lights teams that wished to stay in business went either to the Atlantic series, which replaced Indy Lights as the support race at most CART events, or the new Infiniti Pro Series, which ran in support of Indy Racing League events. Indy Lights
Indy NXT, previously Indy Lights, is an American developmental automobile racing series sanctioned by IndyCar, currently known as Firestone Indy NXT Series for sponsorship reasons. Indy Lights is the highest step on the Road to Indy, a program of racing series leading up to the IndyCar Series. The Indy Lights series has been promoted by Anderson Promotions since 2014, which also manages the Road to Indy program. A similar series named Indy Lights filled the developmental role for the CART series, and ran from 1986 to 1993 as the American Racing Series and Dayton Indy Lights from 1991 to 2001. The current IndyCar sanctioned series was founded in 2002 as the Infiniti Pro Series as a way to introduce new talent to IndyCar, with the moniker Indy Lights returning in 2008 when CART and IndyCar unified. Andy Booth (racing Driver)
Andy Booth (born 2 June 1974) is a New Zealand racing driver. A relatively late starter in motorsport, Booth never raced karts, and only competed in a handful of Formula Ford events in New Zealand before heading to the UK where he spent several years successfully campaigning in the Slick 50 Formula Ford Championship, and later in the Formula Palmer Audi series. He has also competed in Indy Lights in the US and Formula Holden in Australia. Booth won the Tasman Series (Formula Holden) in 2000, driving for the NRC International team, also taking the New Zealand Grand Prix and Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy in the same year. Booth then briefly competed in Indy Lights in the US, Since 2001 he has been competing in the NZ V8s exclusively, winning the series in 03/04 and 04/05, and consistently placing in the top 6. Derek Higgins
Derek Higgins ( ga, Ruaridh Ó hUiginn; born June 12, 1964) is an Irish former race car driver. Born in Dublin, he was a two-time winner of the Mexican Formula 3 championship in 1995 and 1997 before moving to the American Indy Lights series in 1998. After two successful seasons where he racked up four wins and finished 5th and 7th in series points, he completed his Indy Racing League rookie test at Walt Disney World Speedway with McCormack Motorsports, expecting to find a ride in the series. However, he was unable sign a deal with a team and returned to Indy Lights for a partial season in 2000 and a complete season in 2001, the series' last. After Indy Lights he competed in a few Toyota Atlantic races in 2002 and has not competed in a notable professional race since. Cory Witherill
Cory Witherill (born December 17, 1971) is a Native American Navajo people, Navajo race car driver from Los Angeles in the Indy Racing League, Infiniti Pro Series, Indy Lights, and Auto Racing Club of America, ARCA series. He made an incredible bump day run on a brand new engine to qualify for the 2001 Indianapolis 500, becoming the only full-blooded Native American to race in the Indy 500. He finished 19th. In 2002 and 2003, with the collapse of the IRL team he drove for, he went to the Infiniti Pro Series driving for Ron Hemelgarn Racing. Indy Regency Racing
Indy Regency Racing was a racing team owned by Sal Incandela who had worked with several Formula One and CART teams. Team history The team made its debut at the Mid-Ohio round of the 1991 Indy Lights championship, with David Kudrave as its driver, and contested the entire Indy Lights series for 1992 (again with Kudrave). In 1993 the team made its move to the CART Championship Car series by fielding a car in the 1993 Indianapolis 500 for F1 veteran Olivier Grouillard. The team's first race that year was to be the Indianapolis 500, however, the car failed to make the field for the "500" but Grouillard participated in 11 races that season for the team. In 1994 the team signed 1990 Indy 500 champion Arie Luyendyk who had been let go by Chip Ganassi Racing. Geoff Boss is an American racing driver best known for his appearance in the 2003 CART season for Dale Coyne Racing. Boss also competed across 5 years in Indy Lights where he won the Toronto Grand Prix from pole position and had 4 additional podiums in Long Beach and Detroit. Jon Fogarty
Jon Fogarty (born May 23, 1975 in Palo Alto, California) is an American racing driver, who competes in the United SportsCar Championship for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. He won the 2007 and 2009 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype drivers' championship and is a two-time Atlantic Championship champion as well. Early racing career Fogarty competed in the Barber Dodge Pro Series from 1996 until 2000, finishing series runner-up twice. Damien Faulkner
Damien Faulkner (born 15 February 1977) is an Irish race car driver from Moville County Donegal. Beginning his professional career in Formula Vauxhall Junior in 1995, he competed in the Formula Ford Festival in 1996 and finished 11th. He finished in 3rd place in Vauxhall Junior in 1997 and moved to Formula Palmer Audi in 1998 where he finished sixth and third in series points in his first two seasons. At the end of 1999 he had his first taste of F3000 when he tested for Arden as part of his prize for finishing third in Palmer Audi. Nilton Rossoni
Nilton 'Niltinho' Rossoni (Curitiba, April 21, 1981) is a former Brazilian racing driver who won the 2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series championship. Racing career After winning karting championships in the Paraná and São Paulo regions the young driver graduated into single-seaters in 1997. The sixteen-year-old raced in the Formula Chevrolet Brazil, a support series to the highly popular Stock Car Brasil. He won the rookie of the year title in his inaugural season. Near the end of the racing season the Brazilian made his debut in the Barber Dodge Pro Series. He qualified twelfth out of 27 but had to retire after one lap due to a clutch failure.
