2001 Insight.com Bowl
The 2001 Insight.com Bowl was the 13th edition of the Insight.com Bowl. It featured the 2001 Syracuse Orangemen football team, Syracuse Orangemen, and the 2001 Kansas State Wildcats football team, Kansas State Wildcats, and it was a rematch of the 1997 Fiesta Bowl (December), 1997 Fiesta Bowl, played in nearby Tempe, Arizona, Tempe. Game summary Syracuse opened the scoring on a 65-yard touchdown run by running back James Mungro making it 7–0 Syracuse. Kansas State's Joe Rheem kicked a 29–yard field goal to pull KSU to 7–3, closing the first quarter scoring. In the second quarter, James Mungro scored on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, but on both occasions the extra point fell short, as Syracuse led 19–3. After a scoreless third quarter, backup quarterback RJ Anderson fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to Johnnie Morant making the final score 26–3. Big East Conference (1979–2013)
The Big East Conference was a collegiate athletics conference that consisted of as many as 16 universities in the eastern half of the United States from 1979 to 2013. The conference's members participated in 24 NCAA sports. The conference had a history of success at the national level in basketball throughout its history, while its shorter (1991 to 2013) football program, created by inviting one college and four other "associate members" (their football programs only) into the conference, resulted in two national championships. In basketball, Big East teams made 18 Final Four appearances and won 7 NCAA championships as Big East members through 2013 (UConn with three, Georgetown, Syracuse, Louisville and Villanova with one each). Guaranteed Rate Bowl
The Guaranteed Rate Bowl is an annual college football bowl game that has been played in the state of Arizona since 1989. Played as the Copper Bowl from inception through 1996, it was known as the Insight.com Bowl from 1997 through 2001, then the Insight Bowl from 2002 through 2011, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl for 2012 and 2013, and the Cactus Bowl for the 2014 through 2017 seasons. In 2018 and 2019, the game was known as the Cheez-It Bowl. In 2020, Guaranteed Rate signed on as the title sponsor of the game, renaming it as the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. When the bowl was initially founded, it was played at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, on the campus of the University of Arizona. In 2000, the organizers moved the game from Tucson to Phoenix. 2001–02 NCAA Football Bowl Games
The 2001–02 NCAA football bowl games concluded the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Miami Hurricanes won the BCS National Championship Game over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 37–14. A total of 25 team-competitive games were played—starting on December 18, 2001, and ending on January 3, 2002—with participation by 50 bowl-eligible teams. North Texas entered the New Orleans Bowl with a losing record of 5–6; they were able to play in a bowl game by being co-champions of the Sun Belt Conference, having compiled a 5–1 conference record. An additional five all-star games were played, ending with the Hula Bowl on February 2, 2002. One bowl game was established for the 2001–02 season, the New Orleans Bowl. The 1997 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl game was a post-season college football bowl game between the 1997 Kansas State Wildcats football team, Kansas State Wildcats and the 1997 Syracuse Orangemen football team, Syracuse Orangemen on December 31, 1997, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
