General elections were held in Guyana on 19 March 2001. National Assembly Of Guyana
The National Assembly is one of the two components of the Parliament of Guyana. Under Article 51 of the Constitution of Guyana, the Parliament of Guyana consists of the President and the National Assembly. The National Assembly has 65 members elected using the system of proportional representation. Twenty five are elected from the ten geographical constituencies and forty are awarded at the national level on the basis of block votes secured, using the LR-Hare Formula as prescribed by the elections Laws (Amendment) Act 15 of 2000 (Sections 11 and 12). People's National Congress (Guyana)
The People's National Congress Reform is a social-democratic and democratic socialist political party in Guyana led by Aubrey Norton. The party currently holds 31 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly. In Guyana's ethnically divided political landscape, the PNCR is a multi-ethnic organization supported primarily by Afro-Guyanese people. It is the main component of the A Partnership for National Unity coalition. History The PNC was formed in 1957 by the faction of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) led by Forbes Burnham that had lost the general elections earlier in the year. Asgar Ally
Asgar Ally is a former Guyanese politician. He served as Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1995. He was deputy governor of the Bank of Jamaica prior to returning to Guyana to serve as minister of finance. He resigned as minister of finance in May 1995 over "political and policy differences" with President Jagan. Soon after, Ally founded the Guyana Democratic Party, and in July 1996 announced that he would run for president in the 1997 elections. Manzoor Nadir (14 November 1955) is a Guyanese politician and Speaker of the National Assembly. Nadir was the Guyanese Minister of Labour and party leader of The United Force between 2001 and 2011. Biography Mazoon Nadir was born in Albouystown, Georgetown on 14 November 1955.
