The 2001 GP Ouest-France was the 65th edition of the GP Ouest-France cycle race and was held on 2 September 2001. The race started and finished in Plouay. The race was won by Nico Mattan of the Cofidis team. Nico Mattan
Nico Mattan (born 17 July 1971) is a Belgian former road racing cyclist. His greatest achievement in cycling was winning the Gent–Wevelgem classic in 2005. In 2005 Mattan won the Gent–Wevelgem in a controversial way, as there were claims that he used Publicity cars to sprint past Juan Antonio Flecha. He also won 2 prologues of Paris–Nice, in 2001 and 2003. He is known to be very superstitious, for instance his lucky number is 17 (the date of his birthdate), if his race number is 17 or if the ciphers add up to 17, he will look very happy and believes he will win. Once he got number 13 and wore it upside down to avoid bad luck because he heard on a 13th that he wouldn't be able to race anymore because of heart problems and lost the leader's jersey in Paris–Nice on a 13th. Mario Aerts
Mario Aerts (born 31 December 1974 in Herentals, Belgium) is a former professional road bicycle racer, who competed between 1996 and 2011. He competed for three teams; Vlaanderen 2002, and the Lotto team through various sponsorships, competing with that particular team for twelve seasons during his career. During this time he raced in the Tours de France, the Giro d'Italia, and the Vuelta a España. In the 2007 cycling season, he finished in these three major stage races in cycling. He was only the 25th racer in the history of cycling to achieve this. Aerts won the Grand Prix d'Isbergues in 1996, Circuit Franco Belge in 2001, the Giro della Provincia di Lucca in 2001, and most notably La Flèche Wallonne in 2002; he did not win a professional race after that. Bretagne Classic
The Bretagne Classic, also called Bretagne Classic Ouest–France, is an elite cycling classic held annually in late summer around the Breton village of Plouay in western France. The race was originally named Grand–Prix de Plouay and, from 1989 to 2015, GP Ouest–France. It was included in the inaugural UCI ProTour in 2005 and in 2011 in its successor, the UCI World Tour. Since 2016 it is called Bretagne Classic Ouest–France. Since 2002, a women's event, the GP Plouay–Bretagne is organized on Saturday, the day before the men's race. Supporting events have grown over the years and now include BMX races, track racing and a mass-participation ride, as part of a four–day festival in the last summer weekend in Brittany. Beat Zberg (born 10 May 1971 in Altdorf, Uri) is a Swiss former professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTeam Gerolsteiner. In 2007 he became the Swiss National champion, winning the road race alone and over 2 minutes ahead of 2nd placed Fabian Cancellara. Later that year, he retired from active competition. David Moncoutié (born 30 April 1975) is a retired French professional road racing cyclist, who rode with the French team , for his entire professional career. He was a climber, and won his first professional race in a mountain stage of Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré. He won the Mountains Classification in Vuelta a España four times, one short of the record of five held by José Luis Laguía. Serge Baguet
Serge Baguet (18 August 1969 – 9 February 2017) was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer. Career He was the son of the ex-cyclist Roger Baguet. He was married to Sandra Rasschaert and they have a son (Sam). Baguet started his professional cycling career in 1991. He worked for Lotto for five years and one year for Vlaanderen 2002. His major victories were stages in the Tour du Limousin and the Tour of Britain. After six years pro-cycling, he became a roofer. In 2000, he made a comeback in the cycling-milieu (again with Lotto) and won his biggest victory in his career: a stage in the Tour de France. In 2005 he won two stages in the Vuelta a Andalucía and became Belgian national cycling champion. In 2006 and 2007, Baguet rode for the second big Belgian UCI ProTeam: Quick Step-Innergetic. He was one of only three Festina team riders who were named as clean during the Festina doping scandal during the 1998 Tour de France. Halgand announced his retirement on 28 December 2008. Cofidis Solutions Crédits () is a French professional road bicycle racing team sponsored by a money-lending company, Cofidis. It was started in 1996 by Cyrille Guimard, the former manager of Bernard Hinault, Greg LeMond and Laurent Fignon of the Renault-Elf-Gitane team of the 1980s. The team's sponsor has supported the team despite repeated problems such as doping scandals. After it was part of the UCI ProTour for the ProTour's first five seasons, from 2010 the team competed as a UCI Professional Continental team. The team joined the UCI World Tour for the 2020 season. Plouay
Plouay (; ) is a commune in the Morbihan department in Brittany in north-western France. Plouay hosts the GP Ouest-France and the GP de Plouay, annual cycling races (a men's and women's race, respectively). It was also the location of the UCI Road World Championships in 2000. The Tour de France has visited this town three times: in 1998, 2002 and in 2006.
