2001 Australia Day Honours
The 2001 Australia Day Honours are appointments to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by Australian citizens. The list was announced on 26 January 2001 by the Governor General of Australia, Sir William Deane. The Australia Day Honours are the first of the two major annual honours lists, the first announced to coincide with Australia Day (26 January), with the other being the Queen's Birthday Honours, which are announced on the second Monday in June. Australian Honours System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all Order (distinction), orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarchy of Australia, Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the Australian Honours Order of Wearing, order of wearing, like those in the Order of Saint John (chartered 1888), Order of St John). Honours and awards have been present in Australia since pre-Federation of Australia, Federation, primarily from the Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom, Imperial honours and awards system. Ian George
Ian Gordon Combe George (12 August 1934 – 28 January 2019) was an Australian Anglican bishop. He was the third Archbishop of Adelaide and Metropolitan of South Australia from 1991 to 2004. Early life and education George was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide and the University of Adelaide. Career After an earlier career as a lawyer, he was ordained a priest in 1964. He held curacies at St Thomas's Mamaroneck and St David's Burnside; and was then priest in charge at St Barbara's Woomera. After this he was a chaplain and lecturer in history at the University of Western Australia. He was Dean of Brisbane from 1973 to 1981 when he became Archdeacon of Canberra. In 1989, he was appointed an assistant bishop of the diocese, consecrated on 28 October; and in 1991 was translated to Adelaide. Ossie Cruse
Oswald "Ossie" Cruse is an Australian activist and Aboriginal elder. Cruse was born in 1933 in Orbost, Victoria. He became active in the area of Aboriginal rights after the 1967 Australian referendum (Aboriginals), 1967 Australian referendum, touring Africa with former prime minister Gough Whitlam and becoming a member of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. Cruse was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1977 Silver Jubilee and Birthday Honours and a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2001 Australia Day Honours. Geoffrey Connard
Geoffrey Philip Connard (13 October 1925 – 27 January 2013) was the member for Higinbotham Province in the Parliament of Victoria, Australia from 1982 to 1996. He played a crucial role in a number of Victorian, Australian and International health reforms and continued to work in the health sector following his retirement from parliamentary life. His support was crucial to the passing of the legislation establishing VicHealth. Geoffrey was inaugural chair of the Macfarlane Burnet Centre from 1986 to 1990 and was a member of the Burnet Institute Board until 2007. He was chairman of the International Diabetes Institute from 1997 to 2000. Jean Brodie-Hall
Jean, Lady Brodie-Hall, , FAILA (15 August 1925 – July 2023) was an Australian landscape architect. She was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and had a long and distinguished career in Western Australia before her retirement in 1981. She was acknowledged as a leader in West Australian landscape architecture and received a national award for landscape architecture in 1990. Dorothy Braxton
Dorothy Pearl Braxton (née Mason; 1 August 1927 – 3 September 2014) was the first female journalist from New Zealand to visit Antarctica. In February 1968, she travelled on the ''Magga Dan'' to the Ross Sea. She was also among the first women to visit Cape Hallett. She wrote a book, ''The abominable snow-women'', about her trip. Vice Admiral Christopher Angus Ritchie (born 16 January 1949) is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy, who served as Chief of Navy from 2002 to 2005. Charles Perkins (Aboriginal Activist)
Charles Nelson Perkins , usually known as Charlie Perkins (16 June 1936 – 19 October 2000), was an Aboriginal Australian activist, soccer player and administrator. He was the first Indigenous Australian man to graduate tertiary education, and is known for his instigation and organisation of the 1965 Freedom Ride and his key role in advocating for a "yes" vote in the 1967 referendum. John Olsen (Australian Artist)
John Henry Olsen AO OBE (born 21 January 1928) is an Australian artist and winner of the 2005 Archibald Prize. Olsen's primary subject of work is landscape. Early life and training John Olsen was born in Newcastle on 21 January 1928. He moved to Bondi Beach with his family in 1935 and began a lifelong fascination with Sydney Harbour. He attended St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill.
