Czech First League
The Czech First League, known as the Fortuna liga for sponsorship reasons, is a Czech professional league for football clubs. At the top of the Czech football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Seasons typically run from August to May, most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays with few games played on Fridays. All Fortuna liga clubs qualify for the Czech Cup. The history of the Czech football league began with its reorganization for the 1993–94 season following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and therefore the league became the successor of the Czechoslovak League. Thirty-five clubs have competed in the Fortuna liga since its founding. Sparta Prague has won the title 12 times, the most among Czech clubs. Other clubs that were crowned as champions are Slavia Prague, Slovan Liberec, Baník Ostrava and Viktoria Plzeň, who are the reigning champions. Gambrinus (beer)
Gambrinus () is a beer brewed in the Czech Republic at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. It is one of the most popular beers in the Czech Republic. The beer is named after Gambrinus, a legendary European king known for his mythical brewing abilities. The company was founded in 1869. Jiří Kowalík
Jiří Kowalík (born 5 September 1977) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a striker. He is notable for being the top scorer of the Gambrinus liga in 2002–03, scoring 16 goals for 1. FC Synot. Kowalík's career at the top was ended when, in 2004, he tore knee ligaments while at Brno. After some time in Slovakia, Kowalík returned to the Czech Republic in 2008 to play for FK Mutěnice in the Moravian–Silesian Football League. Radim Holub (born 12 November 1975) is a Czech former football player. He played more than 300 games in the Czech First League for various clubs including Jablonec, Hradec Králové, Sparta Prague, Mladá Boleslav and Drnovice. Pavel Kuka
Pavel Kuka (born 19 July 1968) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a forward. Born in Prague, Kuka started and finished his career at Slavia Prague, playing with the club from 1989–93 and then from 2000–05. He has also played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1994–98), 1. FC Nürnberg (1998–99), and VfB Stuttgart (1999–2000). For the Czech Republic national team, Kuka played 63 times, scoring 22 goals and was part of the runner-up squad at Euro 96 and also took part at Euro 2000. Kuka also played 24 times, scoring seven goals, for Czechoslovakia. After his retirement in May 2005 he briefly worked as a manager in FK Marila Příbram (another Gambrinus league team) and then became football agent. Pavel Hapal
Pavel Hapal (born 27 July 1969) is a Czech former football player and current manager of Baník Ostrava. Playing career Hapal's professional career began at SK Sigma Olomouc. After the club's successful season when they reached the quarter-final of 1991–92 UEFA Cup he signed for Bayer Leverkusen with whom he won the DFB-Pokal in 1993. During his career he also played for Dukla Prague, CD Tenerife, Sparta Prague and SK Dynamo České Budějovice. At international level he earned 31 caps for Czechoslovakia and later Czech Republic having scored one goal. Hapal ended his career as a player in 2002. Managerial career From 2003, he has worked as a manager. In 2010, he won the Slovak Superliga with MŠK Žilina and entered the 2010-11 Champions League group stage, however his team lost all six of their matches. Prague Derby
The Prague derby ( cs, Pražské derby) or Derby of the Prague S ( cs, Derby pražských S) is a football match between local Prague rivals SK Slavia Prague and AC Sparta Prague. The two clubs are considered to be the most successful in the Czech football, having won league and cup titles multiple times. The two were both founded in the late 19th century, Slavia one year before their rivals in 1892, though Slavia did not play football until four years later. The first match between the teams was played on 29 March 1896, with the game finishing 0–0. The two clubs are the most successful and famous in the country and their dominance has led the derby to be referred in a similar way as the Scottish Old Firm. As of 5 December 2021 the fixture has been played 303 times. Sparta have won 136 of those matches, 72 ended as a draw and Slavia have won 95. FK Teplice
FK Teplice is a Czech football club based in the city of Teplice. The club currently plays in the Czech First League. The club was founded after World War II in 1945. The club advanced to the Czechoslovak First League in just three years after being founded and played mostly in the First and Second Czechoslovak divisions. After the Velvet Revolution and comeback of rich sponsor, Glaverbel (spun out of glassworks Sklo Union in 1991), the club played in the Second Division until returning to the top flight in the 1996–97 Czech First League. FK Jablonec () is a Czech professional football club based in Jablonec nad Nisou. The club has played in the top league of Czech football, Czech First League, since 1994. FC Zbrojovka Brno is a professional football club based in the city of Brno, South Moravia, Czech Republic and named after Zbrojovka Brno, a firearms manufacturer. Bohemians 1905
Bohemians Praha 1905 (previously named FC Bohemians Praha) is a Prague-based football club, which was founded in 1905 as AFK Vršovice. The club won the 1982–83 Czechoslovak First League, its only league championship. Its colours are green and white. The best known player from Bohemians' history is Antonín Panenka, who is now the club chairman. Bohemians' mascot is a kangaroo, the legacy of a 1927 tour of Australia. Following the tour, the club was awarded two live kangaroos, which they donated to the Prague Zoo.
