2000–01 Barnsley F.C. Season
During the 2000–01 English football season, Barnsley F.C. competed in the Football League First Division. Season summary With Craig Hignett and Nicky Eaden departing, manager Dave Bassett brought in inexperienced Carl Regan and Lee Jones to bolster the squad in the hopes that Barnsley would finally return to the Premiership. However, Barnsley's increasingly rapid turnover of managers was to continue during the season with Bassett leaving in December, a surprise decision to most. Nigel Spackman was brought in to replace Bassett, and the team eventually finished in sixteenth position, above Sheffield Wednesday by virtue of goal difference. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. In Barnsley, the population was 96,888 while the wider Borough has seen an increase of 5.8%, from 231,200 in 2011 census to 244,600 in 2021 census. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is located between the cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Doncaster, Wakefield, and Leeds. The larger towns of Rotherham and Huddersfield are nearby. Barnsley's former industries include linen, coal mining, glassmaking and textiles. Lee Jones (footballer Born 1973)
Philip Lee Jones (born 29 May 1973) is a Welsh football coach and former player who played as a forward. Career Born in Wrexham, he began his career with his hometown club. In March 1992, he moved to Liverpool, aged 18. However, he only managed four appearances in five years, in part due to suffering two broken legs. He was loaned out to Crewe Alexandra, twice back to Wrexham, and finally to Tranmere Rovers where he scored five goals in eight games. Tranmere signed Jones for £100,000 in June 1997. He spent three years with Tranmere before being released in May 2000. In July, he moved to First Division club Barnsley on a free transfer, but in 2002 he returned to Wrexham for a fourth spell. In the summer of 2004 he was released, subsequently joining League of Wales side Caernarfon Town. Grimsby or Great Grimsby is a port town and the administrative centre of North East Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire, England. Darren Barnard
Darren Sean Barnard (born 30 November 1971) is a former professional footballer, manager and coach. Barnard was a wing-back and midfielder from 1989 until 2010 in the Premier League for both Chelsea and Barnsley. He also played in the Football League for Reading, Bristol City and Grimsby Town before playing in the Conference National for Aldershot Town and finishing his career with Non-league Camberley Town. Born in Germany, he was capped 24 times for the Wales national team and eight times for the England U18. In 2007, while a player with Camberley Town, he became the club's technical director before becoming its first team manager in 2010. He stepped down from his role following the end of the 2011–12 season. He has since worked as the academy manager of Aldershot Town. Robertus Petrus van der Laan (born 5 September 1968) is a Dutch football manager of Northern Premier League Division One South club Newcastle Town, and a former player. He began his playing career in his native the Netherlands with Eerste Divisie club Schiedamse Voetbal Vereniging in 1987, before moving on to Wageningen in 1990. In 1991, he moved to England to play for Port Vale, where after four seasons as one of the club's key players he was sold on to Derby County. He won the League Trophy with Vale in 1993, and won promotion out of the Second Division in 1993–94. He also won promotion out of the First Division with Derby in 1995–96. In 1998, he transferred to Barnsley, where he saw out his professional playing career until his retirement due to injury in 2001. Jermaine Christopher Darlington (born 11 April 1974) is an English former professional footballer and current manager. He was most recently joint manager of Faversham Town. Career Playing career Darlington began his career as a trainee at Charlton Athletic, where he played two first-team games near the end of the 1991–92 season. He was released a year later and dropped out of the professional game, continuing his career on a semi-professional basis, playing with Dover Athletic, Hendon and Aylesbury United.
