Orrin Hatch
Orrin Grant Hatch (March 22, 1934 – April 23, 2022) was an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from Utah from 1977 to 2019. Hatch's 42-year Senate tenure made him the longest-serving Republican U.S. senator in history, though Chuck Grassley is expected to surpass him in 2023. Hatch chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from 1981 to 1987. He served as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001 and 2003 to 2005. On January 3, 2015, after the 114th United States Congress was sworn in, he became president pro tempore of the Senate. Scott N. Howell (born September 28, 1953) is an American politician from Utah. He was the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate from Utah in the 2000 and 2012 elections. Early life and education Howell was born in Provo, Utah. He grew up in Salt Lake City. He attended Dixie State College in Southern Utah on a football scholarship and graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. Career After graduation, Howell went to work with IBM, where he advanced through the years until he became the director of Global System Integrators/Channel Strategies and the executive of IBM Public Sector operations. Carbon County is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 21,403. Its county seat and largest city is Price. The Price, UT Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Carbon County. History Carbon County was part of Emery County, founded in 1880. The demographics along the Price River changed with the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1883 and the development of coal mines, largely in upper Emery, to fuel the railroad. The Utah Territory Legislature was petitioned to split off the north part, and thus it established Carbon County effective March 8, 1894. Price is a city in the U.S. state of Utah and the county seat of Carbon County. The city is home to Utah State University Eastern, as well as the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum. Price is located within short distances of both Nine Mile Canyon and the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The population was 8,715 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Carbon County. The 2000 United States Senate elections were held on November 7, 2000. The elections coincided with other federal and state elections, including the presidential election which was won by Republican George W. Bush. It featured a number of fiercely contested elections that resulted in a victory for the Democratic Party, which gained a net total of four seats from the Republican Party. This election marked the first election year since 1990 where Democrats made net gains in the Senate. These elections took place six years after Republicans had won a net gain of eight seats in Senate Class 1. Despite George W.
