The 2000 Melbourne Cup was the 140th running of the Melbourne Cup, a prestigious Australian Thoroughbred horse race. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. It was originally run over but was shortened to in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. This reduced the distance by , and Rain Lover's 1968 race record of 3:19.1 was accordingly adjusted to 3:17.9. The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3:16.3. Dwayne Dunn
Dwayne Dunn (born 1973 or 1974) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria, Australia, Victoria. He won the Scobie Breasley Medal in 2016. Dunn began his career in 1989. He rode his first Group One winner on Undoubtedly in the 2005 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse, Caulfield. He holds the jockeys’ record for numbers of wins in the Blue Diamond with five. He rode All Too Hard 10 times for seven wins, four of them at Group One level. As of late May 2021, he has ridden 2,185 winners, including 24 in Group One races. Dunn suffered a neck fracture and a brain injury at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Moonee Valley in September 2020 when his mount Shot Of Irish reared in the starting gate. After attempting to resume riding he found the brain trauma was too severe and long-lasting, and in May 2021 he decided to concentrate on achieving a full recovery, leaving his riding future in doubt. Kevin Darley
Kevin Darley (born 5 August 1960, in Penn, Wolverhampton) is a retired jockey, and a co-president of the Jockeys' Association of Great Britain. He was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 1978 with 70 wins and Champion Jockey in 2000 with 155 wins. He also won the Lester Award for Flat Jockey of the Year in 2000, and won the Lester Special Recognition Award in 1997 and 2007. He was associated with a number of trainers including Mark Johnston, for whom he won the English 1,000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes on Attraction. He also won the St Leger on Bollin Eric and French Derby on Celtic Swing. Married with two daughters, he retired as a jockey in November 2007, after a disappointing year blighted by niggling injuries. Martin Pipe
Martin Charles Pipe (born 29 May 1945), is an English former racehorse trainer credited with professionalising the British racehorse training industry, and as of 2021 the most successful trainer in British jump racing. The son of a West-Country bookmaker, Pipe was an amateur jockey before turning his attention to training in 1974 at Nicholashayne, Somerset, near Wellington, England, at Pond House stables. Pipe is broadly credited with professionalising National Hunt racing. He made multiple simple but effective changes to what had been then the traditional methods of training racehorses, specifically those in jump racing. His training innovations included using interval training, using daily blood tests to assess fitness, and keeping horses lean during the racing season, all intended to ensure his horses were at peak fitness for races. Chris Munce (born 17 May 1969) is a highly successful Thoroughbred horse racing jockey, having won both the Melbourne Cup and the Cox Plate. Gai Waterhouse
Gabriel Marie "Gai" Waterhouse (née Smith; born 2 September 1954) is an Australian horse trainer and businesswoman. The daughter of Tommy J. Smith, a leading trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, Waterhouse was born and raised in Sydney. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, she worked as an actor for a time, appearing in both Australian and English television series. Having worked under her father for a period of 15 years, Waterhouse was granted an Australian Jockey Club (AJC) licence in 1992, and trained her first Group One (G1) winner later that year. In 1994, after her father became ill, she took over his Tulloch Lodge stable, and she has since trained 145 G1 winners and won seven Sydney trainers' premierships. Lanfranco Dettori (; born 15 December 1970), better known as Frankie Dettori, is an Italian horse racing jockey based in the United Kingdom. Dettori has been British flat racing Champion Jockey three times and has ridden the winners of more than 500 Group races. This includes 20 winners of the English classics. Darren Gauci
Darren Gauci (born 26 December 1965, in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian jockey. Racing career Gauci was one of Australia's most successful and durable jockeys. He won the Senior Victorian Jockeys Premiership in 1983–84, 1985–86 and 1990–91. He came close to winning Australian racing's greatest prize on three occasions, with seconds in the Melbourne Cup on Chagemar (1984), Super Impose (1989) and on a Jeune (2005). John M. Oxx (born 14 July 1950) is a retired Irish trainer of thoroughbred racehorses. Craig Williams (jockey)
Craig Williams (born 23 May 1977) is a Victoria, Australia based jockey. He has won multiple Group One, group one races in Australia and worldwide, including the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Williams rode his first race in 1993. In 2011, he almost achieved a unique Australian horse racing triple, in winning the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. After winning the first two on Southern Speed and Pinker Pinker respectively, Williams was suspended for careless riding during the 2011 Bendigo Cup.
