2000 London Assembly Election
The first elections for members of the London Assembly were held on 4 May 2000, alongside the first mayoral election. The assembly elections used the mixed member proportional representation, a form of additional member system, with 14 directly elected constituencies and 11 London-wide top-up seats. Eric Ollerenshaw
Eric Ollerenshaw OBE (born 26 March 1950) is a British Conservative Party politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lancaster and Fleetwood from 2010 to 2015. He was born and grew up in Lancashire and was educated at Hyde County Grammar School and the London School of Economics where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1971. He has previously been an elected member of the London Assembly and head of the Cities and Diversity section of the Conservative Party at Conservative Campaign Headquarters. Teaching career Before moving into politics, Ollerenshaw was a full-time teacher of History. British National Party
The British National Party (BNP) is a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom. It is headquartered in Wigton, Cumbria, and its leader is Adam Walker. A minor party, it has no elected representatives at any level of UK government. Founded in 1982, the party reached its greatest level of success in the 2000s, when it had over fifty seats in local government, one seat on the London Assembly, and two Members of the European Parliament. Taking its name from that of a defunct 1960s far-right party, the BNP was created by John Tyndall and other former members of the fascist National Front (NF). During the 1980s and 1990s, the BNP placed little emphasis on contesting elections, in which it did poorly. Richard Barnes (British Politician)
Richard Michael Barnes (born 1 December 1947) is a British politician, who was the Deputy Mayor of London from 2008 to 2012. A former member of the Conservative Party, Barnes served as the Leader of the Conservatives on the London Assembly from 2007 to 2008, and was the Member of the London Assembly (AM) for Ealing and Hillingdon from 2000 to 2012, when he lost his seat to Labour. On 30 September 2014, Barnes defected to the UK Independence Party (UKIP). Lurline Champagnie
Lurline Champagnie OBE, (born 1935/1936 in Jamaica), became the first black woman to stand as a parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom in March 1992. She was a Mayor in the London Borough of Harrow, and a councillor for the Pinner ward, being the first black person to hold these positions. Biography Born in Jamaica, Champagnie emigrated to Britain in 1956. She was first employed in London as a punch operator. She trained as a nurse at Mount Vernon Hospital, including time in the burns and plastic surgery unit. After travelling to the US on a scholarship in 1964, she became aware of the possible supports available for women after mastectomies. She worked for a prosthesis supplier, and then ran her own business catering for post-mastectomy patients. Elizabeth Howlett (born November 1938) is a Conservative Party politician and former member of the London Assembly for Merton and Wandsworth. Andrew Pelling
Andrew John Pelling (born 20 August 1959) is a British politician. First elected as a Conservative he was an independent Member of Parliament for Croydon Central and on 30 March 2010 announced his intention to contest the seat as an Independent at the 2010 general election, but lost the seat to his former party. He was also a member of the London Assembly for Croydon and Sutton and a councillor in Croydon. Pelling later became a member of the Labour Party in February 2011; he was subsequently expelled from Labour in February 2022. Tony Arbour
Anthony Francis Arbour JP (born 30 August 1945), commonly known as Tony Arbour, is a British Conservative Party politician. From 2000 until his retirement in 2021, he was a member of the London Assembly representing South West London and is a former Richmond councillor. He was educated at St Andrew's School and Surbiton County Grammar School before going to the then Kingston College of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. Anita E. Halpin (born April 1944) is an English communist and trade union activist of German-Jewish descent who has been successful in having paintings returned to her that were looted by the Nazis from her grandfather, Alfred Hess, in the 1930s. Several works, such as ''Berlin Street Scene'' (1913) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and ''Nude'' by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, have been returned to her and subsequently sold; the former sold at auction for £20.5 million to the Neue Galerie New York, which also paid over £1 million to Halpin for ''Nude''.
