General elections were held in Gibraltar in 2000. They were won by Peter Caruana's incumbent Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD), which received over 50% of the popular vote and won eight of the fifteen seats. Gibraltar Parliament
The Gibraltar Parliament is the legislature of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. Between 1969 and 2006, it was called the Gibraltar House of Assembly. Functions The House of Assembly, set up under the 1969 constitution, was a unicameral body originally consisting of 15 members elected by the Gibraltar electorate, plus two appointed members including the Attorney-General. The term "House of Assembly" has been commonly used for the legislatures of British territories that are less than fully sovereign. It was replaced by the current Gibraltar Parliament by the new 2006 constitution, reflecting an increase in its sovereignty. All 17 of the new Parliament's members are elected. Liberal Party Of Gibraltar
The Liberal Party of Gibraltar (Libs or LPG) is a liberal political party in Gibraltar. It was founded in 1991 as the Gibraltar National Party and is led by Dr. Joseph Garcia. The LPG forms the GSLP–Liberal Alliance in partnership with the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party. Policy In line with most liberal parties, the party describes their political philosophy as being based on notions of people deciding their own future, and are committed to Gibraltarian self-determination regarding constitutional arrangements. The Gibraltar Reform Party was a political party in Gibraltar. It was a left-leaning party which described itself as green and for social justice. Originally formed as the Independent Liberal Forum on 21 March 2000, the name was subsequently changed to the later one. The last party leader was Lyana Armstrong-Emery. The party's broad aim was a decentralisation of power. On the constitutional status of Gibraltar, the party supported a new status, calling for Gibraltar's establishment as a devolved autonomous territory, integrated within a decentralised federal Britain. The Hon. Steven Ernest Linares is a Gibraltarian teacher, trade unionist, barrister and politician affiliated to the Liberal Party of Gibraltar (LPG). He is an MP at the Gibraltar Parliament and as of December 2011 formed part of the Government of Gibraltar as Minister for Sport, Culture, Heritage, Youth, Utilities, Refuse Collection, Fire Service, Civil Contingencies and Postal Services. The Hon. Dr. John Reginald Garcia Valarino MB, ChB, better known as Reggie Valarino, (9 June 1941 – 13 March 2009) was a Gibraltarian doctor and politician. Early life Dr. Valarino was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1941 to Federico Garcia Montalvo and Eugenia Valarino. His father was a horse trainer and his mother a housewife and seamstress. Joseph John Andrew Garcia is a Gibraltarian historian and politician, and the current leader of the Liberal Party of Gibraltar (LPG) and Deputy Chief Minister of the Government of Gibraltar. The LPG controls three of the 17 seats in the Gibraltar Parliament after the 2011 general election and is in government with its political allies, the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP). Biography Yvette Del Agua was born in Gibraltar on 21 October 1957, daughter to Joseph and Lourdes Montegriffo. She attended St. Mary's Infant School, Loreto High School and the Commercial & Secretarial School ( Town Range). She started working at age 17 as a clerical assistant. Keith Azopardi (born 6 June 1967) is a Gibraltarian lawyer and politician serving as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Gibraltar Social Democrats since 2017.
