2000 BDO World Darts Championship
The 2000 Embassy World Professional Darts Championship was held at the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green, Surrey between 8–16 January 2000. Ted Hankey was in imperious form throughout the tournament, reaching the quarter-finals without dropping a set and battling back from 4-2 down in the semi-finals against Chris Mason - who had earlier thwarted Raymond van Barneveld's ambitions of three consecutive BDO World titles - to win 5-4. He then took just 46 minutes to beat Ronnie Baxter 6-0 in the final - finishing off with a maximum 170 checkout. Hankey also hit a record 48 180s in the tournament, including 22 against Mason. Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey. It hosted in January the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter (born 1928) bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. The Lakeside had a fire later that decade and re-opened. During the 25th year of hosting the World Darts Championship, in 2010 the lake had largely iced over by 7 January. Wayne Mardle
Wayne Elliot Mardle (born 10 May 1973) is an English former professional darts player who played in events of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and British Darts Organisation (BDO). He was runner-up in three PDC majors, losing to Phil Taylor on each occasion. He was also a five-time world semi-finalist. He currently works as a pundit and commentator. He has been known as "Hawaii 501" since 2000, a play on the title of the popular television series '' Hawaii Five-O'', due to the Hawaiian shirts he started wearing in 1998 for a bet, and 501 being the start score of a leg of darts. Ritchie Davies
Ritchie Davies (born 27 November 1971) is a Welsh former professional darts player from Aberdare. He is best known for his run at the 2003 BDO World Darts Championship, where he reached the final. Career Davies made his World Championship debut in 1997 but managed to win only one match (a 3–0 win over Les Wallace in 2000) in his first six visits to the Lakeside. He then produced his run to the final in 2003. In doing so, he beat Albertino Essers, former champion John 'Boy' Walton, and defending champion Tony David for the loss of just one set, before defeating Gary Anderson 5–2 in the semi-finals. Denis Ovens
Denis Ovens (born 1 July 1957 in Enfield) is an English retired professional darts player. He is nicknamed ''The Heat'' and is now based in Stevenage. Ovens is widely regarded as one of the most consistent players in the circuit, though he has as yet failed to convert his form from the circuit to the big stages on television. His constant second round exits in numerous televised tournaments has led him to be called by commentators as 'The Nearly Man'. Bobby George
Robert Francis George (born 16 December 1945) is an English television presenter and former professional darts player. He is widely recognised as one of the game's biggest personalities, known for his flamboyant entrances in which the "King of Darts" makes his way to the stage bedecked in jewellery, wearing a crown and cloak and holding a candelabra to the Queen song 'We Are the Champions'. George won several leading major darts tournaments, he won the News of the World Darts Championship twice and appeared in two BDO Darts World Championship finals and was the first full-time exhibition player. Since 1998, George has also worked for the BBC as a co-presenter and promoter of the game in their coverage of darts tournaments. Kevin Painter
Kevin Painter (born 12 July 1967) is an English retired darts player, known as "The Artist". He is arguably most famous for finishing as the runner-up to Phil Taylor in the 2004 PDC World Championship final, now widely credited as one of the greatest televised matches in the history of the sport. Steve Douglas (darts Player)
Stephen "Steve" Douglas (born 17 November 1977 from Bromley, London) is a former English professional darts player. His nickname was The Game. Career Douglas won the 1995 WDF Europe Youth Cup, and made his BDO World Darts Championship debut in 2000. He defeated Gary Spedding in the first round before losing to eventual champion Ted Hankey in the second round. Douglas returned to the BDO World Championship stage in 2011, losing 0-3 in the first round to Gary Robson. He has also appeared in the Last 16 of the World Masters in 2009 and again in 2011. Douglas qualified for the World Championship again in 2012, and again was drawn against Robson in the first round. On this occasion, Douglas defeated Robson 3-0. Bob Taylor (darts Player)
Bob Taylor (born 15 January 1960) is a Scottish former professional darts player who played in the British Darts Organisation (BDO). Career Taylor made eleven appearances in the BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round in seven of his first eight showings with his one win coming in 1994 against American Tony Payne before losing in the second round to Martin Adams. His bad luck changed in 2002 where he beat John Ferrell and Co Stompé to reach the Quarter Finals, losing to eventual winner Tony David. In 2003, Taylor again reached the Quarter Finals at the Lakeside, with wins over Peter Hunt and Martin Adams before losing to Gary Anderson.
