Robert Torrens O'Neill
The Hon. Robert Torrens O'Neill JP DL (10 January 1845 – 25 July 1910), was an Irish Conservative, and later Irish Unionist politician who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1885 to 1910. Early life O'Neill was the third son of William O'Neill, 1st Baron O'Neill (who was born William Chichester), and his first wife, Henrietta Torrens, daughter of Hon. Robert Torrens, a Judge of the Irish Court of Common Pleas. O'Neill was educated first at Harrow School and then at Brasenose College, Oxford, graduating with a B.A. and, later, an M.A. Military career In 1863, Robert was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was promoted to Captain two years later, and he later became a Colonel in 1881. His military service was partially sidelined as his political career began, and he eventually retired in order to stand for election. Mid Antrim was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. James Martin McCalmont
Colonel James Martin McCalmont (23 May 1847 – 2 February 1913) was a British Army officer and Conservative, later Irish Unionist, politician. Early life and education McCalmont was born in May 1847, second and final son of James McCalmont (1819–1849), JP, DL for County Antrim, and his wife Emily Anne Martin (1827–1901). His older brother was Major-General Sir Hugh McCalmont, Member of Parliament for North Antrim from 1895 to 1899. Both he and his brother were educated at Eton College. Military career After leaving Eton, McCalmont joined the 8th Hussars as a Cornet in 1866. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1869, then Captain in 1871. He retired from the Hussars in 1874, in order to pursue a career in politics. Two years later, he resumed his career as a Lieutenant with the Denbighshire Hussars and was re-promoted to captain in 1877. Sir Ellis Ellis-Griffith, 1st Baronet
Sir Ellis Jones Ellis-Griffith, 1st Baronet, PC, KC (23 May 1860 – 30 November 1926) was a British barrister and radical Liberal politician. He was born Ellis Jones Griffith. Family and education Griffith was the only child of Thomas Morris Griffith (1827-1901), a master builder, and his wife Jane (née Jones) (1823-1881). Both his parents were Welsh, but had been living in Birmingham and the time of his birth, before moving to Brynsiencyn when Griffith was a child. He was initially educated at the Holt Academy, and passed both the Cambridge & Oxford local examinations in 1873. The following year he passed a scholarship examination for the University College, Aberystwyth, where he began studying in 1876. He took an arts degree at the University of London in 1879, graduating with double honours in English and Philosophy, before moving to Downing College, Cambridge, in 1880, where he read law and was President of the Cambridge Union. It forms a principal area known as the Isle of Anglesey, that includes Holy Island across the narrow Cymyran Strait and some islets and skerries.
