28th Division (German Empire)
The 28th Division (german: 28. Division) was a unit of the Prussian and German Army, almost entirely made up of troops from the Grand Duchy of Baden. It was formed in Karlsruhe on 1 July 1871. The division was subordinated in peacetime to the XIV Army Corps (''XIV. Armeekorps''). The 28th Division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. The division, along with the other division of the XIV Army Corps, the 29th Division, was formed in the Grand Duchy of Baden, a member state of the German Empire. Both divisions grew out of the Grand Ducal Baden Division (''Großherzoglich Badische Division''), the army of the grand duchy. The Grand Ducal Baden Division had fought against Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War, but after Prussia's victory Baden and most other German states had entered into conventions subordinating their armies to Prussia's. The 28th Reserve Division (''28. Reserve-Division'') was a unit of the Imperial German Army in World War I. The division was formed on the mobilization of the German Army in August 1914 as part of the XIV Reserve Corps. The division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. The division was raised primarily in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Combat chronicle The 28th Reserve Division spent World War I on the Western Front. It fought in the Battle of the Frontiers and then participated in the Race to the Sea, fighting in the Somme region. It occupied the line in the Artois region from October 1914 to August 1916, and then fought in the Battle of the Somme. From October 1916 to April 1917, the division occupied the line near Verdun. The 28th Jäger Division was a German military unit during World War II. Background The main purpose of the German Jäger Divisions was to fight in adverse terrain where smaller, coordinated units were more easily combat capable than the brute force offered by the standard infantry divisions. The Jäger divisions were more heavily equipped than mountain division, but not as well armed as a larger infantry division. In the early stages of the war, they were the interface divisions fighting in rough terrain and foothills as well as urban areas, between the mountains and the plains. The Jägers (meaning ''hunters'' in German) relied on a high degree of training, and slightly superior communications, as well as their considerable artillery support. History The 28th Division was tasked with the defense of the Manchukuo capital, and the neighboring areas of Harbin and Qiqihar under direct control of Kwantung Army. With the start of the Battle of Saipan 15 June 1944, its 36th Infantry Regiment was sent to Saipan, but returned to division soon as Saipan was lost before 36th regiment could arrive. The 28 Dywizja Piechoty was a Polish Army infantry division which saw action against the invading Germans during the Invasion of Poland of World War II. The division suffered heavy casualties in battles near Łódź and the remnants retreated to Warsaw, where they surrendered. The history of the division dates back to the autumn of 1921, when Polish Army changed its structure, after the victorious Polish–Soviet War. New unit was formed in Warsaw, out of three previously existing infantry regiments, and one light artillery regiment. The 28th Division was one of the divisions of the Spanish Republican Army that were organized during the Spanish Civil War on the basis of the Mixed Brigades. It was deployed on the Aragon and Segre fronts. History The unit was created in April 1937 from the old Ascaso Column, commanded by the anarchist Gregorio Jover. The new 28th Division, in addition to the forces coming from the «Ascaso» column, had also absorbed the remains of other militia forces and became composed of 125th, 126th and 127th mixed brigades; continued under Jover's command. The 28th Division was an infantry Division (military), division of the British Army raised for service in World War I. History Formed in England in December 1914 - January 1915 from regular army battalions returning from India, Singapore and Egypt. In January 1915 the division moved to France and on to the Western Front (World War I), Western Front. The division took part in the Second Battle of Ypres, where they suffered massive casualties, and in the Battle of Loos. The 28th Infantry Division ("Keystone") is a unit of the Army National Guard and is the oldest division-sized unit in the Department of Defense.
