2024 European Wrestling Championships
The 2024 European Wrestling Championships was held from 12 to 18 February 2024 in Bucharest, Romania. At the 2024 European Championships, in accordance with sanctions imposed following by the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, wrestlers from Russia and Belarus were not permitted to use the name, flag, or anthem of Russia or Belarus. They instead participated as "Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN)", their medals were not included in the official medal table. Georgios Kougioumtsidis () is a Greek freestyle wrestler. He won the gold medal in the 79 kg event at the 2022 European Wrestling Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. He represented Greece at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Career In March 2021, Kougioumtsidis competed at the European Qualification Tournament in Budapest, Hungary hoping to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. In May 2021, he failed to qualify for the Olympics at the World Qualification Tournament held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Iman Mahdavi (; born 12 February 1995) is an Iranian freestyle wrestler who immigrated to Italy, and competed with the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Early life Iman Mahdavi was born on 12 February 1995, in Iran along the Caspian Sea. He grew up in the Mazandaran province. His father was a wrestler, which led to Mahdavi's involvement in the sport starting at the age of fifteen. Mahdavi became a seven-time national junior champion. Mahdavi's father later died of a heart attack after being wrongly informed his son had died in a traffic collision. In October 2020, Mahdavi left Iran due to ongoing concerns of its government's treatment of human rights by walking across its border with Turkey. Twenty days later, in November, Mahdavi flew to Milan, Italy, where he applied for asylum. Khetag Nikolayevich Tsabolov (, ; born 17 November 1991), also known as Khetik Tsabolov (), is a Russian and Serbian freestyle wrestler who competes at 74 kilograms. After competing for Russia throughout his career, Tsabolov transferred to Serbia in February 2021, and has since represented the latter. An accomplished athlete, he won the World Championship and the Russian Nationals in 2014 (70 kg), and claimed a World Championship silver medal after winning Russian Nationals in 2017. Born Armand Fernandez in Nice, France, Arman was a painter who moved from using objects for the ink or paint traces they leave (''cachets'', ''allures d'objet'') to using them as the artworks themselves.
