Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Giorgia Birkeland (born June 14, 2002) is an Italian-born American speed skater. She competed in the women's mass start event at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Speed skating career Birkeland started speed skating at the age of 8 in her hometown of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In 2020, she made the national long-distance track team and competed at the World Junior Long Track Championships in Poland, finishing 11th place. Birkeland later participated at the AmCup, placing fourth in the mass start event and fourth in the 3000m event. She made the national team again for the 2021–22 season and placed seventh in the team pursuit event at the World Cup. At the 2022 US trials, Birkeland won the final qualifying race and was given Team USA's discretionary spot for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Ramona Härdi (''Ramona Haerdi'') (born on April 9, 1997, in Möriken, Aargau, Switzerland) is a Swiss speed-skater. She competed for Switzerland at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the ladies' mass start. Valérie Maltais (born July 4, 1990) is a Canadian short track speed skater and speed skater. She has won six world championship medals, including finishing second overall in 2012. Career Early career She began skating at the age of 6 and, in 2009, was the Canadian Champion in the 1500m. In that same year, she received a bronze medal in relay at the World Short Track Championships. She was set to compete for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in the Ladies' 3000m relay. Maltais did not compete in the relay however but did compete in the 1,500 m where she finished fourteenth. Post-Olympics, Maltais succeeded at the 2012 World Championships.
