2023 World Para Swimming Championships – Women's 50 Metre Freestyle
The women's 50m freestyle events at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships were held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre between 31 July and 6 August. Events were held in eleven classifications. Medalists Results S3 12 swimmers took part in this event, with both the heats and final on 4 August. Swimmers in S1 and S2 classes were eligible in this event. 2023 World Para Swimming Championships
The 2023 World Para Swimming Championships was the 12th edition of the World Para Swimming Championships, an international swimming competition for swimmers with disabilities. It was held in Manchester, Great Britain from 31 July to 6 August 2023. This was the third time that Great Britain have hosted the World Para Swimming Championships with Glasgow hosting in 2015 and London hosting in 2019. The World Championships serves as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Paralympics where two top swimmers in each individual medal event final will be automatically selected to compete at the Paralympics. As a swimmer can only hold one quota, which makes them eligible for all events in their classification for which they have a qualifying time, unrequired quotas are returned to be distributed later. Cecília Kethlen Jerônimo de Araújo (born 13 October 1998) is a Brazilian Paralympic swimmer. She represents Brazil in elite international competitions. Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago (born 2 August 1985), also known as Carol Santiago, is a Brazilian Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics and won five medals, including three gold medals. Life Santiago has a congenital eye condition called morning glory syndrome which is a defect in her optic nerve, she is partially sighted in her left eye but doesn't have peripheral vision in her right eye. She began swimming aged four and took part in able-bodied swimming competitions and open water swimming aged twelve. By the age of seventeen, she was completely blind for eight months due to accumulation of water in her retina and stopped swimming. Karolina Pelendritou
Karolina Pelendritou (born 25 August 1986 in Limassol) is a visually impaired swimmer from Cyprus. She has won gold medals and broken records in national and international games as well as winning three gold medals, a silver and two bronze over four Paralympic Games (winning medals in each Games except for 2016 when she came in 4th). Due to her achievements she is known as the "Princess of the Pool". Pelendritou was the first living person to appear on a national Cypriot stamp, in 2004. Liesette Bruinsma
Liesette Bruinsma (born 9 September 2000) is a Dutch Paralympic swimmer. She competes in S11 classification events for athletes with visual impairments. She is the 2016 double Paralympic champion within her classification. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's 400 metre freestyle S11, and Women's 100 metre freestyle S11, winning silver medals. Alexa Leary
Alexa Leary (born 18 August 2001) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She won a gold medal and silver medal at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships. She has been selected to compete at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris. Personal life Leary was born on 18 August 2001. Her parents are Russ and Belinda Leary. She has two sisters, Madison and Ashtyn, and two brothers Max and Jack. She grew up on the Gold Coast and later Yamba and Noosa, where her triathlon coach was based. She attended Good Shepherd Lutheran College. On 17 July 2021, Leary suffered life-changing brain injuries as a result of a serious cycling accident in Pomona, Queensland. Whilst riding her bike in training for triathlons, her front wheel clipped the bike ahead at 70 km/h.
