2023 Vaimauga 3 By-election
A by-election was held in the Vaimauga 3 constituency in Samoa on 24 February 2023. The by-election was triggered by the death of the incumbent member of parliament Tapunuu Niko Lee Hang of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), in November 2022. A constituency widely considered an HRPP stronghold, former shipping executive Lautimuia Uelese Vaʻai of the ruling Faʻatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party won the by-election with 56%. He defeated Samau Leatigagaeono Timani of the opposition HRPP, who obtained 39%, and Independent candidate Feagaimaalii Bruce Toomalatai who garnered 3%. Lautimuia Uelese Vaʻai
Lautimuia Afoa Uelese Vaʻai (born ) is a Samoan politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa. He is a member of the FAST Party. He is a nephew of former Prime Minister Vaʻai Kolone. Lautimuia is from the villages of Magiagi and Vaisala and trained as an accountant at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji and Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. He worked as a lecturer at the National University of Samoa and as a senior civil servant before being appointed chief executive of the Samoa Shipping Corporation in November 2017. He contested the 2016 Samoan general election in the Vaimauga West 1 Constituency as a candidate for the Human Rights Protection Party. Tapunuu Niko Lee Hang
Tapunuu Niko Lee Hang (1953/1954 – 29 November 2022) was a Samoan politician and Cabinet Minister. He was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Hang was an accountant by profession and a former Public Trustee. He was educated at Waikato University in New Zealand and the University of New England in Australia. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa as one of two parliamentary representatives reserved for Individual Voters in a by-election in December 2001. In January 2002 he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary to Minister of Justice. In 2004 he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary to minister of Revenue. Human Rights Protection Party
The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP, sm, Vaega Faaupufai e Puipuia Aia Tatau a Tagata) is a Samoan political party. It was founded in 1982 and dominated Samoan party politics for decades thereafter, leading every government until their defeat in 2021. Va'ai Kolone and Tofilau Eti Alesana co-founded the party in May 1979 in opposition to the government of Tupuola Efi. It has governed the country since first winning power in 1982, except for a brief period in 1986 and 1987 when internal differences forced it into coalition. Samoa First Party
Samoa First ( sm, Fa'amuamua Samoa), officially the Samoa First Political Party, is a political party in Samoa. The party is nationalist, supporting the protection of customary lands and opposing Chinese immigration. It is led by Unasa Iuni Sapolu. The party was registered in July 2018. In March 2019 the party unsuccessfully contested the Fa'asalelega No. 2 byelection. Following the by-election the party's candidate, Lema'i Faioso Sione, was banished from his village for not supporting the candidate backed by the village council. Samoa Shipping Corporation
The Samoa Shipping Corporation is a government-owned company in Samoa which provides freight and passenger services between Savai'i, Upolu and American Samoa. Established in 1974, the corporation is managed as a public trading body under the Public Bodies (Performance and Accountability) Act 2001. The corporation also provides maritime support services, including engineering services in Apia and a slipway at Satitoa in Aleipata. It maintains facilities at Mulifanua, Salelologa, Apia and Pago Pago. History The corporation was initially funded by overseas aid. 2016 Samoan General Election
General elections were held in Samoa on 4 March 2016 to determine the composition of the 16th Parliament. Two parties contested the election, the ruling Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), led by prime minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi which had governed since 1982 and the Tautua Samoa Party, led by opposition leader Palusalue Faʻapo II. The election was held following the passage of electoral reforms, including the implementation of a parliamentary women's quota that requires the legislature to have at least five female members. Salelologa
Salelologa is a village district at the east end of Savai'i island in Samoa. It is the main entry point into the island with the only ferry terminal on Savai'i. It also serves as the main township for shopping and public amenities with a market selling fresh produce and arts and crafts. Salelologa is made up of smaller sub-villages ''pito nu'u'' and falls within the electoral district of Fa'asaleleaga. Township The township consists of one main shopping street. Fresh fish, locally grown produce and arts and crafts are sold at the Salelologa Market (''makeki'') which was recently moved to a new site by the wharf in 2009.
