2023 Kuwaiti General Election
Snap general elections were held in Kuwait on 6 June 2023 to elect 50 of the 65 members of the National Assembly. The elections took place following the annulment of the results of the 2022 snap elections by the Constitutional Court on 19 March 2023 and the redissolution of the 16th session on 2 May. Background During the 16th legislative session, uncooperative MPs and ministers led to multiple no-confidence votes and several government resignations. Actions such as members sitting in ministers' seats in the parliament, led to ministers not attend sessions, which in turn resulted in a member-organized sit-in in the parliament building. This prompted Crown Prince Mishal Al-Ahmad to dissolve parliament on 2 August 2022. Multiple former MPs and citizens appealed to the Constitutional Court to overturn the dissolution. 2022 Kuwaiti General Election
General elections were held in Kuwait on 29 September 2022 following the dissolution of National Assembly (Kuwait), parliament by Crown Prince Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Background On 22 June Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah announced the dissolution of Parliament. On 28 August, the Kuwaiti Cabinet approved the decree calling for elections on 29 September. Electoral system The 50 elected members of the National Assembly (Kuwait), National Assembly are elected from five 10-seat constituencies by single non-transferable vote. Political parties are not officially licensed, therefore candidates run as individuals, although many political groups operate freely as de facto political parties. All Kuwaiti citizens (both male and female) above the age of 21 have the right to vote. Kuwait's Second Constituency
The second constituency of Kuwait is a legislative constituency in Kuwait. Like the other four constituencies in Kuwait, it elects exactly 10 members to the National Assembly via plurality vote. As of 2022, it currently represents eighteen residential areas and has an electorate of 90,478 (the smallest). Hamad Almatar
Hamad Mohammed Jassim Al-Matar (born July 8, 1970) is a member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, and holds a doctorate in industrial chemistry. He boycotted the National Assembly elections after adjusting the number of votes from four to one, in solidarity with the Popular Action Movement in 2012. Muhannad Al-Sayer
Muhannad Talal Al-Sayer ( ar, مهند طلال الساير; born 7 January 1981) is a Kuwaiti lawyer currently serving as member of National Assembly since 2020. He was notably the main lawyer representing Mohammed Al-Maimoni who was murdered by two prison guards at the Kuwait Central Prison. Career Law career Muhannad Al-Sayer got his bachelor of Law in 2004. In 2011, he was appointed by Kuwaiti Society of Lawyers as the defending lawyer of the late Mohammed Al-Maimoni. Mohammed Barak Al-Mutair (Arabic: محمد براك المطير) is the current Deputy Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, representing the second district. Saud Abdulaziz Saud Al-Asfoor Al-Hajri ( ar, سعود عبدالعزيز سعود العصفور الهاجري; born 1972) is a journalist and engineer that has served in the National Assembly since 2023. Ahmed Al-Sadoun
Ahmed Abdulaziz al-Sadoun ( ar, أحمد عبدالعزيز السعدون) (born 1934) is the Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly from October 2022. He was previously the speaker from 1985 to 1999 and from February 2012 until it was declared that the February 2012 elections were invalid. He is the leader of the Popular Action Bloc in the Assembly and served for eight terms. He represented the third district. Obaid Mohammed Abdullah Zaid Obaid Al-Mutairi (; born January 5, 1971), also known as Obaid Al-Wasmi, is a Kuwaiti academic, politician and former member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly.
