2023 Fano–ENDF Clashes
The War in Amhara is an armed conflict and insurgency in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia that began in April 2023 between the Fano militia and the Ethiopian government. The conflict started after the government attempted to dissolve the Amhara Special Forces and other regional forces as part of a plan to reform and centralize the country's security apparatus, and integrate them into the federal armed forces. This move led to protests and armed resistance by local forces under Fano. Tensions between Fano and the government had been growing for a year before the conflict. Although Fano fighters had allied with the government during the Tigray war, relations soured after the 2022 peace agreement, which Fano viewed as a betrayal. The government, in turn, saw Fano as a growing threat due to its unregulated nature. The ongoing Ethiopian civil conflict began with the 2018 dissolution of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), an ethnic federalism, ethnic federalist, Dominant-party system, dominant party political coalition. Baye Kengaw (Amharic: ባዬ ቀናው) is an Ethiopian rebel leader of Fano militia who leads the South Gondar Command. Since 2023, he is partaking in the War in Amhara fighting against the government force. Meketaw Mamo (Amharic: መከታው ማሞ) is an Ethiopian rebel leader and commander of the Shewa faction of the Fano militia. Mihretu "Mire" Wodajo (Amharic: ምህረቱ ወዳጆ) is an Ethiopian rebel leader of Fano militia in the Wollo faction. Since 2023, he is currently allied to Fano as part of War in Amhara. Eskinder Nega (, born 7 November 1969) is an Ethiopian journalist, blogger and politician who has been convicted several times by the Ethiopian government for treason and terrorism. In September 2019, Eskinder founded the Balderas Party and became a chairman thereafter.
