2022–23 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2022–23 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 66th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 20 September 2022 and concluded on 28 April 2023 with Valur winning the national championship after beating Keflavík in the Úrvalsdeild finals, 3–1. Kiana Johnson of Valur was named the Finals MVP. Competition format The participating teams first play a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 28 games. The top four teams qualify for the championship playoffs whilst the bottom team will be relegated to 1. deild kvenna. Grindavík
Grindavík () is a fishing town on the Southern Peninsula (Iceland), Southern Peninsula of Iceland not far from the tuya Þorbjörn (mountain), Þorbjörn. ''Morgunblaðið'' (, ''The Morning Paper'') is an Icelandic newspaper. ''Morgunblaðið''s website, mbl.is, is the most popular website in Iceland. Ívar Ásgrímsson
Ívar Ásgrímsson (born 11 April 1965) is an Icelandic basketball coach and the former head coach of the Icelandic women's national basketball team. He led Haukar to the national men's finals in 2016 where they lost to KR. Playing career Club career Ívar played for 14 seasons in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild, 11 of them with Haukar where he won the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 1985, 1986 and 1996. He won the national championship in 1988 with Haukar after beating Njarðvík in the finals. He scored 14 points in the third and deciding game of the series, and sent it into a second overtime after scoring two free throws with 10 seconds left. Jón Halldór Eðvaldsson
Jón Halldór Eðvaldsson (born 13 March 1975) is an Icelandic basketball coach and television personality. He has served as a basketball analyst for '' Körfuboltakvöld'' (English: Basketball Night) on Stöð 2 Sport. Early life Before turning to coaching, Jón Halldór was a basketball referee and a football player for several years, playing the goalkeeper position. In 1999, he appeared in 17 matches for Víðir in the Icelandic second-tier 1. deild karla. Coaching career In June 2006, Jón Halldór was hired as the head coach of Úrvalsdeild kvenna club Keflavík. Hlíðarendi () is a multi-purpose stadium in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the home-court of Valur's football, basketball and handball teams. The football stadium holds 2,465 people, including 1,201 in seats. The indoor court holds 1,300 people in seats. Njarðvík () is a town in southwestern Iceland, on the peninsula of Reykjanes. As of 2009, its population was 4,400. Hörður Axel Vilhjálmsson (born 18 December 1988) is an Icelandic basketball player for Álftanes of the Úrvalsdeild karla and the Icelandic national team. He is the Úrvalsdeild karla all-time leader in assists. Professional career Hörður began his senior team career at the age of 15 with Fjölnir Reykjavík. At 17, he moved to Spain to play for Gran Canaria, but returned shortly later to Iceland and joined Njarðvík. He started the 2008–2009 season with Club Melilla but returned to Iceland again and finished the season Úrvalsdeild club Keflavík. ÍR Women's Basketball
The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur women's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the women's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland. History ÍR women's team was founded in 1950 and was one of the pioneers of women's basketball in Iceland as one of the founding members of the women's Icelandic women's championship tournament. Hafnarfjörður (), officially Hafnarfjarðarkaupstaður (), is a port town and municipality in Iceland, located about south of Reykjavík.
