2022–23 Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball Team
The 2022–23 Texas Longhorns women's basketball team represents the University of Texas at Austin in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The team is coached by Vic Schaefer entering his third season at Texas. The Longhorns are members of the Big 12 Conference and play their home games at the new Moody Center. This will be the Longhorns' first season at the newly constructed Moody Center. Previously, Texas played at the Frank Erwin Center. This will be the first time the Longhorns have a new arena since 1977 when Texas moved from the Gregory Gymnasium to the Frank Erwin Center. Vic Schaefer
Victor Ernest Schaefer (born March 2, 1961) is an American college basketball coach who is the head women's basketball coach of the University of Texas at Austin (Texas) Longhorns. He previously served as the head coach for Mississippi State, from 2012 to 2020, and for Sam Houston State, from 1990 to 1997. Mississippi State Schaefer was named the Bulldogs’ head coach on March 13, 2012, replacing Sharon Fanning-Otis who retired at the end of the 2012 season. In his tenure at MSU Schaefer has led the Bulldogs to five NCAA tournaments, Four Sweet Sixteen appearances, 3 Elite 8 appearances, 2 Final Fours, and 2 National Runner-up finishes. He also guided MSU to 2 SEC Championship and 1 SEC Tournament Championship, the only conference titles for MSU in any women's team sport. Pete Maravich Assembly Center
The Pete Maravich Assembly Center is a 13,215-seat multi-purpose arena in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The arena opened in 1972. It is home to the Louisiana State University Tigers and Lady Tigers basketball teams, the LSU Tigers women's gymnastics team and the LSU Tigers women's volleyball team. It was originally known as the LSU Assembly Center, but was renamed in honor of Pete Maravich, a Tiger basketball legend, shortly after his death in 1988. Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer signed an act to rename the building in Maravich's honor (under Louisiana law, no LSU or state owned building may be named after a living person). Maravich never played in the arena as a collegian but played in it as a member of the Atlanta Hawks in a preseason game. But his exploits while at LSU led the university to build a larger home for the basketball team, which languished for decades in the shadow of the school's football program.
