2022–23 Michigan State Spartans Women's Basketball Team
The 2022–23 Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team represented Michigan State University as a member of the Big Ten Conference during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Spartans, led by 16th-year head coach Suzy Merchant played their home games at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan. They finished the season 16–14, 7–10 in Big Ten play to finish in ninth place. They defeated Nebraska in the second round of the Big Ten tournament before losing to Indiana. The Spartans were invited to the National Invitation Tournament, but declined the invitation due in part to the Michigan State shooting on campus. On January 28, 2023, head coach Suzy Merchant was involved in an automobile crash which led to her being hospitalized. Suzy Merchant
Suzy Merchant (born July 26, 1969) is the current head coach for the Michigan State University Women's Basketball team. She is married to Gary Rakan and has two sons, Tyler Rakan and Brady Rakan. Coaching career Saginaw Valley State After inheriting a team with a losing record, Merchant quickly built the SVSU program into a winner, compiling a 54–29 record during her three-year tenure as head coach. During her first season, the team earned a 15–11 record before going 19–11 in the following year. The latter achievement earned the team a berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in school history. In her final season, Saginaw Valley State collected a 20–7 record, and was ranked as high as 15th in the nation during the season. The Phil Knight Invitational is a college basketball event held in Portland, Oregon to celebrate Nike, Inc., Nike co-founder Phil Knight. There have been three different events held, most recently in November 2022. The Earle A. & Virginia H. Chiles Center is a 4,852-seat multi-purpose arena in Portland, Oregon, USA. The arena opened in 1984. It is home to the University of Portland Pilots men's and women's basketball teams as well as the women's volleyball team.
