Board Game
Board games are tabletop games that typically use . These pieces are moved or placed on a pre-marked board (playing surface) and often include elements of table, card, role-playing, and miniatures games as well. Many board games feature a competition between two or more players. To show a few examples: in checkers (British English name 'draughts'), a player wins by capturing all opposing pieces, while Eurogames often end with a calculation of final scores. '' Pandemic'' is a cooperative game where players all win or lose as a team, and peg solitaire is a puzzle for one person. There are many varieties of board games. Their representation of real-life situations can range from having no inherent theme, such as checkers, to having a specific theme and narrative, such as ''Cluedo''. Igor Naumkin
Igor Naumkin (10 August 1965 – 13 July 2022) was a Russian chess Grandmaster (chess), Grandmaster. Career He earned his International Master title in 1988 and his Grandmaster title in 1990. Notable victories included over ex-world champion Mikhail Tal, and David Bronstein. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he left for Europe to find better chess opportunities, eventually settling in Italy and becoming fluent in the language. Naumkin traveled in Europe from tournament to tournament and was known for being a highly active player. In 2019, he was the #1 most active grandmaster with 258 games in 41 tournaments. Suspension Naumkin was suspended for six months in 2017 for trying to manipulate a game by offering an opponent a victory in exchange for 200 euros. His opponent refused, and after an investigation Naumkin, along with two other players, were suspended. Death He died in Asti, Italy on 13 July 2022. Hero Games
Hero Games (''DOJ, Inc dba Hero Games'') is the publisher of the Hero System, a generic roleplaying rules set that can be used to simulate many different genres, and was the co-developer of the ''Fuzion'' system. History In 1981, George MacDonald and Steve Peterson, from San Mateo, California, printed 1,000 copies of a 64-page rulebook for Champions, their super-hero role-playing game, to take to a Bay Area gaming convention. It sold very strongly, enough to form a company, Hero Games. Later, the pair recruited Ray Greer as their sales and marketing partner. In the following years, the company published two more editions of Champions, two dozen adventures, and several self-contained role-playing games using the Champions core rules as a universal role-playing system: Danger International, Justice, Inc., Robot Warriors, Fantasy Hero and Star Hero. Darren Watts
Darren Watts (February 17, 1969 – December 31, 2022) was an American game designer who was one of the founders (along with Steve Long) of DOJ Inc. and the president of Hero Games, publishers of roleplaying games using the Hero System such as ''Champions'', ''Fantasy Hero'' and ''Star Hero''. He contributed to multiple conventions for Double Exposure, podcasts such as Explain This, Comics Guys!, and wrote, contributed, and edited many other RPGs. Life and career Darren Watts named his company DOJ, after his Golden Age era ''Champions'' game, which was known as the "Defenders of Justice". New Infinities Productions was an American game company that produced role-playing games and game supplements. History Immediately after leaving TSR, Gary Gygax helped form New Infinities Productions, Inc. TSR, Inc
TSR, Inc. was an American game publishing company, best known as the original publisher of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (''D&D''). Its earliest incarnation, Tactical Studies Rules, was founded in October 1973 by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye. Gygax had been unable to find a publisher for ''D&D'', a new type of game he and Dave Arneson were co-developing, so founded the new company with Kaye to self-publish their products. Needing financing to bring their new game to market, Gygax and Kaye brought in Brian Blume in December as an equal partner. ''Dungeons & Dragons'' is generally considered the first tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG), and established the genre. Kim Rudolph Mohan (May 4, 1949 – December 12, 2022) was an American author, editor and game designer best known for works related to the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' role-playing game. Early life and education Kim Mohan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 4, 1949. His family moved to Williams Bay, Wisconsin, when he was five. In high school, he became an avid science-fiction and fantasy reader, and also played wargames. He graduated third in his class and enrolled at Beloit College. However, he couldn't find a focus, switching majors several times from philosophy to mathematics and other subjects. Career Reporter Not finding what he needed at college, Mohan dropped out and decided to be a writer, finding a job as a reporter for Lake Geneva Regional News. ''Rise and Decline of the Third Reich'' or more commonly ''Third Reich'' is a grand strategy wargame covering the European theater of World War II, designed by John Prados and released in 1974 by Avalon Hill. Players take on the roles of major powers—Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—from 1939 to 1946. The game was popular because of the balance between economics, politics, and land, sea, air and strategic warfare. Players can try alternate history strategies (''e.g.'', a German invasion of Spain or the United Kingdom). The game is complex and can take many hours to complete. Revised editions of the game were published in the 1980s. John Prados
John Frederick Prados (January 9, 1951 – November 29, 2022) was an American author, historian, and wargame designer who specialized in the history of World War II, the Vietnam War, and current international relations. Early life and education Prados was born in Queens, New York on January 9, 1951. His father, Jose Prados-Herrero, moved the family to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where John graduated from high school. He returned to New York to attend university, and received a B.A. (1973), an M.A. in 1975 and a Ph.D. (1982) from Columbia University, all in political science with an emphasis on international relations. His doctoral thesis about the successes and failures of American intelligence assessments of Soviet military power, "The Soviet Estimate: U.S. Intelligence Analysis and Soviet Strategic Forces," became his first book. Mišo Cebalo
Mišo Cebalo (6 February 1945 – 2 September 2022) was a Croatian chess Grandmaster. He won the 19th World Senior Chess Championship at Condino 2009. In 2011 he was awarded the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. His father, a good chess player himself, taught him to play chess when he was five years old. At 13 he began to frequent a local chess club and when he was 20 he played in the Yugoslav championship at Titograd, earning the Master title. Thereafter he enrolled in a language course at the University of Zagreb, stopping for a few years to play chess. After finishing the studies and having got an employment in the Center of Physical Culture of Zagreb, in 1977 he fully resumed his chess activity, earning the International Master title in 1978.
