2022 Wrexham County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Wrexham County Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect 56 members to Wrexham County Borough Council, the principal council of Wrexham County Borough, Wales. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities, and community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. The previous Wrexham County Borough all-council election took place in May 2017 and future elections will take place every five years, with the next scheduled for 2027. On 5 May 2022, the election was held in forty-one of the forty-nine wards for 2022 in Wrexham County Borough. The remaining eight had no opposition nominated by 5 April 2022, and the councillors for these wards were re-elected unopposed, with their wards not holding the election. 2017 Wrexham County Borough Council Election
The 2017 Wrexham County Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2017 to elect members of Wrexham County Borough Council in Wales. This was on the same day as other 2017 United Kingdom local elections. The previous all-council election took place in May 2012. Background The Labour Party held power on the council after the 2012 election, but lost it after splitting because of an internal row. Several Labour councillors became independent, allowing the Independent group to take control in alliance with the Conservatives. In 2017, contests took place in 44 of the 47 wards. Results The Independents lost three seats in comparison with their position immediately prior to the election, but remained the largest group. The Conservative group gained four seats. Wrexham ( ; cy, Wrecsam; ) is a city and the administrative centre of Wrexham County Borough in Wales. It is located between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley, near the border with Cheshire in England. Sarah Atherton
Sarah Elizabeth Atherton (born 15 November 1967) is a British Conservative Party politician, who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wrexham since the 2019 general election. She served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence People, Veterans and Service Families from September to October 2022. She is the first Conservative to represent the Wrexham constituency since its creation in 1918. In addition, Atherton is the first female MP elected to represent the seat, and became the first female Conservative MP elected to Westminster representing a Welsh constituency. The red wall is a term used in British politics to describe constituencies in the Midlands and Northern England which historically supported the Labour Party. At the 2019 general election, many of these constituencies supported the Conservative Party, with the media describing the red wall as having "turned blue". Wrexham County Borough in north-east Wales, is divided into forty-nine electoral wards for Wrexham County Borough Council elections since the 2022 election. Seven of the electoral wards have two councillors. 2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections are due to be held on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They are being held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The last elections were held in 2017. Background In the last local elections in 2017, 1,271 seats were elected. The Labour Party won 468 seats, independent candidates won 309 seats, Plaid Cymru won 208 seats, the Conservative Party won 184 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 63 seats.
