2022 Rhode Island Lieutenant Gubernatorial Election
The 2022 Rhode Island lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2022, to elect the lieutenant governor of the state of Rhode Island. The election coincided with various other federal and state elections, including for Governor of Rhode Island. Primary elections were held on September 13. Rhode Island is one of 21 states that elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor. Incumbent Democratic lieutenant governor Sabina Matos was appointed to the seat in 2021 after the previous incumbent, Dan McKee, ascended to the governorship. McKee was re-elected in 2018 with 61.9% of the vote. Matos won election to a full term, defeating her Republican opponent Aaron Guckian in the closest race for this office since 1998. Sabina Matos (born February 13, 1974) is a Dominican-American politician serving as the 70th lieutenant governor of Rhode Island since April 2021. Sabina Matos is the first Afro-Latina lieutenant governor and the first Dominican-American to hold state-wide office in the United States. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously represented Ward 15 in the Providence City Council and served as its president. Early life Matos was born in Paraíso, Barahona, Dominican Republic. Her mother was a teacher and her father served as mayor of Paraíso. Matos emigrated to the United States in April 1994, at the age of 20, with her parents and sister. Jonathan Aaron Regunberg (born January 26, 1990) is an American progressive activist and politician who served as the member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 4th district from 2015 to 2019. He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Rhode Island in 2018.
