2022 North Carolina Tar Heels Men's Soccer Team
The 2022 North Carolina Tar Heels men's soccer team represented the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the 2022 NCAA Division I men's soccer season. It was the 76th season of the university fielding a program. The Tar Heels were led by twelfth year head coach Carlos Somoano and played their home games at Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels finished the season 8–6–5 overall and 2–2–4 in ACC play to finish in fourth place in the Coastal Division. As the seventh overall seed in the ACC Tournament, they defeated Boston College in the First Round, before losing to eventual champions Syracuse in the Quarterfinals. Carlos Somoano
Carlos Somoano is an American soccer coach, and is currently the head coach of the University of North Carolina North Carolina Tar Heels men's soccer, men's soccer team. In his first season in charge of the Tar Heels, he led the team to the NCAA championship, becoming the second rookie head coach, after Mike Freitag, in NCAA history to do so. Education Somoano received a Bachelor of Science in biology (concentration in pre-medicine) from Eckerd College in 1992. He also earned four letters in soccer and was a two-year team captain. In 2000, he earned a Master's in Sport Management degree from the University of Richmond. Homegrown Player Rule (MLS)
The Homegrown Player Rule is a Major League Soccer program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. Before the creation of the rule in 2008, every player entering Major League Soccer would have to be assigned through one of the existing MLS player allocation processes, such as the MLS SuperDraft. MLS roster rules allow a team to sign players to contracts similar to Generation adidas contracts, which do not count against the MLS salary budget and may earn a much higher salary than the league minimum.
