2022 New York State Senate Election
The 2022 New York State Senate election was held on November 8, 2022. Elections were held to elect representatives from all 63 districts across the State of New York. This election coincided with New York elections for the governorship, U.S. Senate, and state assembly, among others. Districts for this election will be redrawn following the 2020 United States census. Democrats have held a majority in the New York State Senate since January 2019, as a result of the 2018 elections. Background By 2018, the State Senate was the last Republican-controlled body in the New York government. In the 2018 elections, Senate Democrats won control of the chamber from the Republicans. Previously, Republicans had controlled the Senate for all but three years since World War II, with the current era being the Democrats' largest share of New York State Senate seats since 1912. New York State Senate
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature; the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Its members are elected to two-year terms; there are no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. Partisan composition The New York State Senate was dominated by the Republican Party for much of the 20th century. Between World War II and the turn of the 21st century, the Democratic Party only controlled the upper house for one year. The Democrats took control of the Senate following the 1964 elections; however, the Republicans quickly regained a Senate majority in special elections later that year. By 2018, the State Senate was the last Republican-controlled body in New York government. Monica R. Martinez (born August 13, 1977) is a Salvadoran-American, civil servant, educator and politician from the state of New York. A Democrat, she is a member of the New York State Senate representing the 4th district. Martinez has also served in the Suffolk County Legislature, representing the 9th district. She is a former Assistant Principal at East Middle School in Brentwood, NY. Early life and career Martinez was born in El Salvador and moved to the United States at the age of 3. Phillip Michael Boyle (born July 21, 1961) is an American politician who served as the Senator for the 4th District of the New York Senate from 2013 to 2022. He is a Republican. The district he served includes the villages of Babylon, Brightwaters, Lindenhurst, Ocean Beach, Saltaire in Suffolk County on Long Island. Jim Gaughran
James F. Gaughran (born January 5, 1957) is an American attorney and politician from Suffolk County, New York, who served as a member of the New York State Senate from the 5th district. The district is located around the border of Nassau County and Suffolk County, encompassing the town of Huntington and the northern part of the town of Oyster Bay. Gaughran is a member of the Democratic Party. Gaughran served as the chair of the Suffolk County Water Authority from 2010 to 2018. Anthony Palumbo
Anthony Howard Palumbo (born September 14, 1970) is an American Republican Party politician who currently represents the 1st district of the New York State Senate. He previously served as a member of the New York State Assembly. Palumbo attended high school at Patchogue-Medford High School where he starred as a baseball player earning an athletic scholarship to Lafayette College. In 1992, Palumbo was named to the All-Patriot League baseball team. In 1994 Palumbo graduated with a bachelor's degree in Government and Law from Lafayette College.
