2022 Navajo Nation Presidential Election
The 2022 Navajo Nation presidential election took place on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022 to elect the president and vice president of the Navajo Nation. The primary election was held on August 2nd. Incumbent president Jonathan Nez ran for reelection with attorney Chad Abeyta as his running mate. Incumbent Vice President Myron Lizer did not seek re-election, instead running for U.S. House in Arizona. Nez and Abeyta advanced to the general election, as did the challenging ticket of construction manager Buu Nygren and Torreon/Star Lake Chapter President Richelle Montoya. Nygren and Montoya won the general election by a 6-point margin, and Montoya became the Navajo Nation's first female vice president. Buu Nygren
Buu Nygren (born December 25, 1986) is the 10th President of the Navajo Nation. Nygren-Montoya received 34,890 votes, defeating the Nez-Abeyta campaign who received 31,339 votes in the 2022 election. He was sworn in on January 10, 2023, his first political office. Nygren was born on December 25, 1986, in Blanding, Utah. He is of half Navajo and half Southern Vietnamese descent. Navajo National Monument is a National Monument located within the northwest portion of the Navajo Nation territory in northern Arizona, which was established to preserve three well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan people: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery) (), Betatakin (Ledge House) (), and Inscription House (). The monument is high on the Shonto plateau, overlooking the Tsegi Canyon system, west of Kayenta, Arizona. It features a visitor center with a museum, three short self-guided trails, two small campgrounds, and a picnic area. The Sandal Trail is an accessible self-guided roundtrip trail that ends at an overlook of the Betatakin ruins across the 560-foot-deep (170 m) Betatakin Canyon. Sandra D. Jeff (born 1967 or 1968) is an American politician who served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. Career Jeff's reputation for voting with Republicans earned her a primary challenge in 2012. In 2014, Conservation Voters New Mexico was successful in having Jeff removed from the Democratic primary election ballot for reelection. Navajo Nation Council
The Navajo Nation Council ( nv, Béésh bąąh dah siʼání) is the legislative branch of the Navajo Nation government. The council meets four times per year, with additional special sessions, at the Navajo Nation Council Chamber, which is in Window Rock, Arizona. The council is composed of 24 district delegates, or councilors, chosen by direct election, who represent 110 municipal chapters within the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
