2022 Maryland Senate Elections
The 2022 Maryland Senate election were held on November 8, 2022, to elect senators in all 47 districts of the Maryland Senate. Members were elected in single-member constituencies to four-year terms. These elections were held concurrently with various federal and state elections, including for Governor of Maryland. The Democratic and Republican primaries were held on July 19, 2022. Democrats flipped two seats in the Baltimore metropolitan area, which gave them control over 70% of the seats in the chamber. However, Republicans did perform about 4% better as compared to 2018. Background The Democratic Party has held majority control of the Senate since the beginning of the 20th century. The closest that the Republican Party has come to gaining control since then was in 1918, when Democrats held a thin 14 to 13 majority. The Maryland Senate, sometimes referred to as the Maryland State Senate, is the upper house of the General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland. Composed of 47 senators elected from an equal number of constituent single-member districts, the Senate is responsible, along with the Maryland House of Delegates, for passage of laws in Maryland, and for confirming executive appointments made by the Governor of Maryland. It evolved from the upper house of the colonial assembly created in 1650 when Maryland was a proprietary colony controlled by Cecilius Calvert. The Maryland General Assembly is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland that convenes within the State House in Annapolis. Maryland's Legislative District 2 is one of 47 districts in the state for the Maryland General Assembly. It covers part of Washington County. The district is divided into two sub-districts for the Maryland House of Delegates: District 2A and District 2B. Michael Wayne McKay (born March 5, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland) is a Republican member of the Maryland Senate representing District 1, which covers parts of Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties. He was previously the state-delegate for District 1C. Early life and career McKay was born on March 5, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland. He manages a dry cleaning business, which has four locations in Maryland and West Virginia. From 2010 to 2014 served as president of the Allegany County Board of County Commissioners and the Cumberland Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. He also served as a member of the Allegany County Board of Education and various other county-level boards. The Maryland Green Party is the state party organization for Maryland of the Green Party of the United States. The Maryland Green Party qualified as a recognized political party on August 17, 2000, since that time the party has grown to 9,350 members as of April 2018. In November of 2018, outgoing Delegate Shane Robinson switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Green, becoming Maryland's first Green Delegate.
