2022 Iowa Attorney General Election
The 2022 Iowa Attorney General election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the Attorney General of Iowa. Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller, who was first elected Attorney General in 1978, ran for re-election to an eleventh term but was narrowly defeated by Republican nominee Brenna Bird, the county attorney for Guthrie County. Bird received 51% of the vote while Miller received 49% of the vote. Brenna Bird
Brenna Bird (née Findley) is an American lawyer and politician from Iowa. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, she is the incumbant Iowa Attorney General. Bird grew up on a farm near Dexter, Iowa. She earned her bachelor's degree from Drake University and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 2001. She served as counsel to Governor of Iowa, Governor Terry Branstad and became county attorney for Guthrie County, Iowa in 2018. In 2019, a jury ruled that Branstad and Bird had discriminated against an employee because of his sexual orientation, and awarded him $1.5 million. Bird ran for Attorney General of Iowa in the 2010 elections and lost to incumbent Tom Miller (politician), Tom Miller by 11 percent. Thomas John Miller (born August 11, 1944) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 33rd and current Attorney General of Iowa. After the defeat of West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw in 2012 when running for reelection, Miller became the longest serving State Attorney General in the United States, having been in office since 1995. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the same position from 1979 to 1991 as the state's 31st Attorney General. Miller's combined tenure of over 38 years in office makes him the longest serving State Attorney General in United States history, having surpassed Frank J. Kelley's 37-year term of office as Michigan Attorney General; Kelley still holds the record for longest ''continuous'' tenure as an attorney general, having served from 1961 to 1999. The Attorney General of Iowa is the chief legal officer of the State of Iowa, United States. The office was created February 9, 1853. The Office of the Attorney General is housed in the Lucas State Office Building in Des Moines; the attorney general also has a room in the Iowa State Capitol to prepare legislation. Guthrie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,623. The county seat is Guthrie Center. The county was formed on January 15, 1851, and named after Captain Edwin B. Guthrie, who died in the Mexican–American War. Guthrie County is one of the six counties that make up the Des Moines–West Des Moines, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. In July 1849, Barlow Granger began the paper in an abandoned log cabin by the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon River. A general election was held in the U.S. state of Iowa on November 8, 2022. All of Iowa's executive officers were up for election, as well as a United States Senate seat, all four of Iowa's seats in the United States House of Representatives, 25 (half) of the seats in the Iowa Senate, and all 100 seats in the Iowa House of Representatives. Primary elections were held on June 7, 2022. Governor and lieutenant governor Incumbent Republican Governor Kim Reynolds ran for re-election to a second full term as governor.
