2022 Icelandic Municipal Elections
Municipal elections took place in Iceland on 14 May 2022 to elect 64 municipal councils, including 5 councils for municipalities that will be formed after the elections as several municipal mergers take effect. The general method used for the election of the councils is party-list proportional representation if two or more party lists are presented for the elections. 49 municipal councils will be elected in that manner. In two municipalities, only a single list was presented, meaning that the candidates on that list are elected to the municipal council without a vote. Icelandic Socialist Party
The Icelandic Socialist Party ( is, Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands; SFÍ) is a socialist political party in Iceland, which was founded on International Workers' Day (1 May) in 2017. The Pirate Party ( is, Píratar) is a political party in Iceland. The party's platform is based on pirate politics and direct democracy. History The Icelandic Pirate Party was founded on 24 November 2012 by Birgitta Jónsdóttir (previously a member of the Movement) and several Internet activists, including Smári McCarthy. The Viðreisn (, officialy known in English as Liberal Reform Party) is a liberal centre-right political party in Iceland that was founded on 24 May 2016 but had existed as a political network since June 2014. It split from the Independence Party, mainly over discontent with its decision not to hold a referendum on joining the European Union and lack of support for free-trade. The party supports Icelandic EU membership, and reform of farming subsidies and protective excise taxes on foreign produce. A merger, consolidation or amalgamation, in a political or administrative sense, is the combination of two or more political or administrative entities, such as municipality, municipalities (in other words city, cities, towns, etc.), county, counties, districts, etc., into a single entity. This term is used when the process occurs within a sovereign entity. Unbalanced growth or outward expansion of one neighbor may necessitate an administrative decision to merge (see urban sprawl).
