The 2022 Hamilton West by-election was a List of New Zealand by-elections, by-election in New Zealand's electorate. The seat became vacant due to the resignation of former New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party MP Gaurav Sharma (politician), Gaurav Sharma on 18 October 2022 after expulsion from the party caucus. The by-election was held on 10 December 2022, with twelve candidates on the ballot, and was won by the New Zealand National Party, National Party candidate Tama Potaka. Waikato River
The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand, running for through the North Island. It rises on the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, joining the Tongariro River system and flowing through Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake. It then drains Taupō at the lake's northeastern edge, creates the Huka Falls, and flows northwest through the Waikato Plains. It empties into the Tasman Sea south of Auckland, at Port Waikato. It gives its name to the Waikato region that surrounds the Waikato Plains. The present course of the river was largely formed about 17,000 years ago. Contributing factors were climate warming, forest being reestablished in the river headwaters and the deepening, rather than widening, of the existing river channel. 2022 Christchurch Mayoral Election
The 2022 Christchurch mayoral election was part of the 2022 New Zealand local elections that took place on 8 October 2022, with the new mayor's term lasting to 2025. Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki
Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki is a Māori tribe that is based in the area around Clevedon, part of the Auckland region (''Tāmaki'' in the Māori language). It is one of the twelve members of the Hauraki Collective of tribes. The founding ancestors of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki came to New Zealand in the ''Tainui'' migration canoe and left it when it was dragged across Te Tō Waka, the portage from the Tāmaki River to the Manukau Harbour. Their descendants occupied parts of the Hauraki Gulf, including east Auckland as far inland as Otara and Maungarei, as well as Clevedon, Maraetai and Howick. Te Irirangi Drive, a major highway in Manukau City, is named after one of their ''rangatira'' (chiefs), Tara Te Irirangi. Ngāi Tai has a marae at Umupuia Beach, between Maraetai and Clevedon. Donna Pokere-Phillips
Donna Marie Pokere-Phillips is a New Zealand politician known for her conspiracy-driven views. She is the co-leader of the NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party, and was their candidate in the 2022 Hamilton West by-election. She has also been an unsuccessful candidate in parliamentary elections for the Alliance (1999), The Opportunities Party (2017), and the Māori Party (Te Pāti Māori, 2020). In local politics she has made unsuccessful bids for Hamilton's mayoralty in 2022, and City Council seats in 2022 and 2021.
